Ok, so we know that the confetti has barely settled from ringing in the New Year, but 2019 is already delivering the gourmet goods – that is, if this first month of new restaurant openings is anything to go by. Yup, January’s Hot New Tables has already set the benchmark deliciously high, and we cannot wait to see the crazy culinary concepts that follow in the coming months (remember, you’ll hear about them here first!).
Kicking off the year on one helluva high note (read: freaking creative) this month we have a technicolored vegan creamery, two new pool bar concepts, a healthy cactus-clad cafe on one of our fave neighbouring islands, and even gourmet Indonesian food served up tapas-style. Unfortunately, this means that those New Year’s resolutions will have to start another day (#sorrynotsorry) because there’s way too much good food and great times to be had ahead.
2019 – let’s do this!
It’s official – there’s nothing the KYND Community crew can’t do. First they redefined vegan cafe food with the opening of KYND in Seminyak, then they broke boundaries with their plant-based Indonesian tucker at GIVE in Canggu (all not-for-profit, FYI), and now, they’ve given us KYND Creamery – a dairy-free ice-cream parlour scooping out the most colourful, creative cones we’ve ever wrapped our mitts around. Vegan sprinkles, cruelty-free freak shakes – it’s all here, ready for the licking.

Few things lure us away from Bali’s breathtaking beaches, but when the alternative is a glittering swimming pool with pumping tunes, a glam sun deck, hopping pool bar, jacuzzi, tropical restaurant and even boutique accommodation – well, sometimes we make an exception. Yup, Alternative Beach in the heart of Canggu has managed to tempt us away from our sandy hangs to instead sip on poolside cocktails, graze on summery bites and people-watch the cool crowds and bikini babes. Come for the Pina Coladas, stay for the happy hours, and come back for wild rides down the water slide.

Just a hop, skip and a short boat ride away from mainland Bali, you’ll find Secret Penida – a hidden and healthy gem on the pristine shorelines of Nusa Penida, Bali’s paradisal sister island that’s making its way onto every traveller’s itinerary. Well, after we got a taste of the Secret Smashed Avocado, the fluffy Penida Pancakes and the oh-so Instagrammable chia seed jars, we just couldn’t keep this new cafe under wraps for much longer. And anyway, with its pinch-me-cute pink interiors, palm tree murals and towering cactus, you’ll struggle to miss this contemporary, delicious addition to the island.

SVÁ Indonesian Tapas
Food, drinks, beats, dancefloor – SVÁ Indonesian Tapas knows exactly how to get our attention. This brand new three-storey Berawa destination is a tapas bar with a difference, dishing up authentic yet upscale Indonesian food in bite-sized, share-style portions. By day, it’s a cool spot to kick back and graze the afternoon away, while by night, it transforms into a happening little hub with good music, great drinks, and of course, epic Indonesian bites across multiple levels.

Bottega Italiana Berawa
A new address for the island’s Italians to get their fix of just-like-nonna’s nosh, Bottega Italiana has opened yet another set of doors in Bali – this time in Berawa. Now the fourth location on the island (joining its predecessors in Seminyak, Petitenget and central Canggu) you’ll find all of your fave Bottega Italiana signatures here, including the homemade pastas and sauces, those cheese and meat platters, and of course, Bottega’s farm-to-table, back-to-basics, from-scratch approach – the kind that Nonna herself would be proud of.

Just minutes from the beach in the sleepy village of Pererenan, Bokacika is the first – and only – pool bar to open in this quiet and traditional village on the outskirts of Canggu. With the motto “float, feast, frolic”, Bokacika is exactly that – a place to dip, eat and hang out, all the while soaking up the best bits of Bali – rice field views included. Try the signature Beef Rendang tacos with cucumber and spiced cream, wrapped up in a crispy wonton. Washing it down with a cocktail isn’t mandatory, but highly recommended.
