Jiangsu Club
When we talk about Chinese food, chances are Peking Duck and xiao long bao would be the first to come to mind. But, there’s much more to explore – try the vibrant regional cuisine of Jiangsu, China, at Jiangsu Club. Decorated in elegant hues of sapphire blue, ivory, and gold, we think this new restaurant in Sheung Wan is a great place for family gatherings, due to its stunning architecture (with eight private dining rooms) and range of set menus.
Jiangsu Club showcases both traditional and innovative takes on Jiangsu cuisine, presenting flavour profiles unique to the province. We love the hearty Chicken and Wonton Soup, a milky broth that is simmered with a whole three-yellow chicken, Jinhua ham, and Shanghainese cabbage. For those who prefer something sharper on the palate, go for the Deep-fried Twins Baby Yellow Fish, which is the perfect appetiser with its crunchiness, and sweet and sour flavours. To follow, the signature Braised Pork Belly; Dried Farm Vegetables with Braised Pork Knuckle; and Braised Prime Ribs with Brown Sauce and 12 Flavours are all rich dishes ideal for sharing. Our favourites also include the Steamed Cod with Huadiao Wine; Jiangsu Eight Treasures Duck (a complicated dish unlikely to be made at home!); and the chewy Red Date Pudding.

Basin
Taking its name from the lands surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, Basin is a new restaurant in Central set up by industry veteran Erik Kirakozov and chef Antoni Bernabeu. As its name suggests, the eatery offers Mediterranean dishes influenced by French, Spanish, and Italian culinary traditions. Using clean lines and tones of dark blue, gold, and white, Basin is a chic Mediterranean getaway in the midst of Hong Kong’s concrete jungle. And while it’s classy and upscale, we love how it also offers warm hospitality like a true family-style restaurant.
The menu features Chef Bernabeu’s personal favourites, including zucchini flower with goat cheese, walnuts, truffle, and acacia honey; smoked sardines with ajoblanco sauce; and Mediterranean burnt orange pavlova. Our top pick is the roasted peach with honey mascarpone and pistachio – the light mascarpone goes perfectly with the juicy fruit, and the nuts add a bit of crunch. Don’t forget to whip out your phones for live cooking seshes, with the Caesar salad and fresh market fish being prepared tableside for your enjoyment.

Tandoori Bites
At Honeycombers, we love to support small business owners – especially those who actively give back to the community. One such figure is Harry Bisht, the owner of Saffron, a small Indian grocery shop in K Town. Having been offering free meals to the needy, Harry is extending his wonderful act of kindness to his new restaurant – Tandoori Bites – which is just a few steps away from Saffron. Support Harry by trying the specialty dishes at his new establishment, including the Tandoori Chicken Momo; Chicken Tikka Naanza; Goan Fish Curry (best enjoyed with garlic naan!); the vegetarian-friendly Samosa Chaat and Paneer Tikka; among others. Most of these items are cooked using the restaurant’s brick tandoor oven, along with spices and ingredients imported directly from India and the Himalayas. As for the drinks, we love how Tandoori Bites has stocked up on Indian whiskies and wines, which are rarely seen in Hong Kong. It’s also the sole Hong Kong distributor of Godfather Beer, a top-selling beer in India. Cheers to that!

The Wanch is back!
We can’t be more excited about the return of The Wanch! The renowned live music hub is now reopened at a new location (still on the same street though, yay), offering not just the best live music in town, but also a bigger space to enjoy it – plus quality gastropub fare to enjoy during its performances. From an intimate 20-seater that’s opened since 1987 to, now, a whole floor boasting an area that’s over three times its original size, The Wanch is ready to rock ‘n’ roll. Highlights on the new food menu include the Gargantuan Gourmet Chicken Pie; Appetite for Destruction Burger; made-to-order stone-baked pizzas; and more. Oh, and what’s a trip to the pub without a pint or two? Make sure to try the Live Session Ale and For Those About to Hop – two craft beers brewed by the Yardley Brothers, exclusively for The Wanch.
Finally, don’t forget to check out the decors of the pub, most of which are valuable memorabilia that signify incredible moments in the history of Hong Kong. Ranging from vintage tram seats from the 50s, to autographed posters from past music events, to photos of celebrities who were regulars of the venue, The Wanch is a unique institution in the local music, art, and culture scene. You’ll definitely catch us here – even before live music performances resume!

New restaurants in Hong Kong – July edition
Kicho
Think this is some typical yakitori? Think again. Hailing from Tokyo, Kicho is a new restaurant in Hong Kong that reimagines the Japanese delicacy of tori kappo (鶏割烹) ( literally meaning “chicken that is cut and cooked”). Using premium and sustainably raised Kuro Satsuma chicken from Kagoshima, and cooking it on a binchotan charcoal grill, the authentic “comb to claw” dining ritual at Kicho – served omakase-style – encompasses soup, appetisers, skewers, vegetables, rice or noodles, and dessert.
We had the pleasure of trying the seasonal menu at Kicho during its soft opening, which began with a clear chicken broth – a seemingly simple bowl that was surprisingly rich in umami; followed by a baked monaka with chicken liver paste; grilled chicken breast topped with salmon roe and wrapped in seaweed; as well as a series of yakitori, with our favourites being the chicken heart (trust us – you wouldn’t believe it’s offal just by the taste of it) drizzled in house-made ginger and scallion sauce; and the slow-cooked chicken comb – yes, it’s (deliciously) edible! To further elevate your experience, don’t forget to try the sake and wine pairings at Kicho, too. With only 18 seats at the counter and a VIP room for a maximum of just six guests, be sure to book ahead. We can’t wait to return and enjoy another meal with the friendly team at Kicho again!

A Lux
If you’re looking for a quaint fine dining restaurant in Hong Kong, whether for a romantic date or a business meeting, we’d recommend A Lux. A new, understated establishment tucked away at the end of Duddell Street, A Lux offers exquisite Italian-French cuisine, served in an intimate and elegant space. The restaurant currently offers four menus: a three-course Lunch Set Menu; six-course Lunch Tasting Menu; six-course Dinner Set Menu; and the eight-course Signature Menu. We have had the pleasure of trying the Dinner Set Menu; one of our favourites was the Scallop, Asparagus, and Iberico Ham, as the umami of the perfectly seared hand-dived scallops goes excellently with the refreshing asparagus. We also loved the Lobster Bisque with Ravioli and Cognac, as the brandy adds extra depth to the broth and the ravioli is generously filled with lobster meat. Other highlights you should look out for include Beef Broth, Foie Gras, and Truffle; Pigeon, Confit Leg with Five Spices; and the Ginger Crème Brûlée with Caramel Sauce.

New restaurants in Hong Kong – June edition
Decree Izakaya by T
It’s been only around half a year since Decree by T opened its doors in Tsim Sha Tsui, yet it’s already establishing a new branch, plus a sister restaurant – Decree Izakaya by T – over in Central. With the omakase on the 22nd floor and the izakaya on the floor above, Decree by T is a versatile space that can allow for a business lunch, post-work drinks, or a celebratory occasion.
Decorated with both traditional and modern Japanese elements, the izakaya is a relatively casual spot. In addition to the yakitori and grilled seafood, the Four-way Grilled Tuna Collar is also a signature here. Made with a whole tuna collar freshly flown in from Japan, the four dishes are: Shrimp Soup Udon; Soft-boiled Eggs Kimchi Rice; Sweet Pomelo Salad; and Cucumber with Perilla Leaf Roll. Complement these with the variety of beer, cocktails, and Japanese sake on offer.
As for the omakase downstairs, three tasting menus consisting of 14, 17, or 21 courses are available at the moment. Presented in a predominantly Japanese style with French and Chinese influence, our favourite dishes include Sea Cucumber Crystal Ball – a refreshing mix of seaweed salad, Japanese vinaigrette, salmon roe, sea cucumber, and coriander; Fish Maw with Crab Soup – the umami of the crab soup goes without saying (especially when it’s reinforced by the crab floss on top), but the highlight is the croaker fish maw, which feels springy and luscious in the mouth; and Abalone Liver Noodle – a surprisingly satisfying combo of flavours and texture, with the thin, al dente noodles lightly coated in olive oil, a tender Tasmanian abalone cooked in oyster extract, along with the generous spoonful of caviar on top. Other highlights on the menu include Smoked Caviar with Toro Tart; Pan-fried Fish Fin with Chicken Bisque Espuma; 26-day Dry-aged Toro Sushi; and more.

Cantina
New restaurant in Tai Kwun incoming! Cantina, meaning “canteen” in Italian, is what its space used to be, back when it was the colonial Police Officers’ Mess. As a place for casual luncheons and merry celebrations in the past, Cantina aims to continue this tradition by offering a chic, upbeat space for everyone to enjoy throughout the day (yep, there’s free-flow brunch here, too!) From handmade pasta and risotto, to signature thin-crust pizza made from fresh and seasonal ingredients, you can expect traditional Italian recipes with a modern twist. As you sip on your wine, tuck into some cicchetti (small bites originated from Venice) such as Gnocco Fritto served with Parma Ham and Stracchino Cheese. Or, opt for something more filling, like the Cavatelli with Pork Ribs, Beef Flank, and Fennel Sausage Slow-braised in Tomato Sauce. Also, don’t forget to whip your cameras out when the show-stopping Flamed Salt-baked Sea Bass arrives at your table! After it’s set alight and cooked table-side, it’s served with a sweet and sour vegetable caponata. Sour Dough
Passion has always been one of our go-to places for cakes and salads, so boy are we glad when we heard that its founder, Gérard Dubois, is launching his new venture in Hong Kong this month! The new artisan deli is called Sour Dough and, as you may guess from the name, it aims to showcase the rich flavours of sourdough breads and pastries. The fact that all of the baked goods at Sour Dough are made from starters (rye, white, and dark rye) that have been tended to for over 30 years just shows how much thought and preparation the Chef has put in. We can’t wait to try the signature Sour Dough Croissant, the Raspberry Rhubarb Mille Feuille with Tahitian vanilla cream, and a Caramelised Baby Pear Feuilletine Basket. If you’re craving something savoury, Sour Dough also offers a rotating range of vibrant, vegetable-centric salads, as well as vegan soups and hearty sandwiches.

Grand Majestic Sichuan
If you’re a fan of Buenos Aires Polo Club, you might just love Grand Majestic Sichuan, too. Sure, the former is an Argentinian steakhouse while the latter serves Sichuanese cuisine, but both are extravagant, dramatic, and, well, pretty majestic. That said, Grand Majestic Sichuan is certainly taking it up a notch with its fiery delicacies, with highlights such as the Chongqing Laziji (‘firecracker chicken’) and Shui Zhu Yu (red snapper in a broth with dried chillies) to turn up the heat. But, in addition to pleasantly numbingly hot dishes, the menu also features dishes like Chen Pi Niu Rou (beef tenderloin with aged tangerine peel), which showcase other flavour profiles enabled by Sichuan food, such as tingling, garlicky, smokey, and more. Enjoy the full spectrum of Sichuan cuisine at Grand Majestic Sichuan.
