West is (really the) best, some might say! These top-notch cafes will make you take a step back and reevaluate your perception of the region.
The never-ending East versus West rivalry often highlights one thing – there doesn’t seem to be enough cafes on Singapore’s west side, compared to the east. Fortunately, that’s not entirely true. This region has upped its cafe scene game with various notable establishments serving the toastiest coffee and sumptuous brunch fare. Still unconvinced? We sniffed out Singapore’s top cafes in the west you should visit more often.
The best cafes in the west of Singapore
1. Burnt Cones
They say you shouldn’t consume burnt food as it can increase the risk of cancer. But that rule goes out the window if the food’s coming from this cafe in Sunset Way. TBH, these guys are pros at what they do, so you don’t have to worry about anything burnt. What can you get here? Coffee, waffles and, of course, gelato, aka the undeniable star of this show. Enjoy the classics like pistachio, which has a robust nutty note, or go for interesting flavours such as scamorza and ube.
Burnt Cones, #01-02, 105 Clementi Street 12, Singapore 120105
2. Suzuki Coffee
Nope, this has nothing to do with the Japanese brand. On the contrary, this is Singapore’s oldest coffee roastery. Step inside the zen space where your needs and wants are immediately handled. Each brew is meticulously prepared to awaken your senses, all thanks to the passionate coffee masters. Pair your drink with artisanal pastries that’ll whisk you away to Japan.
Suzuki Coffee, 8 Chin Bee Avenue, Singapore 619932
3. Cotelato
How about whimsical creations made of seasonal and locally sourced ingredients? We’re talking specially crafted handbag cakes made of fondue, as well as red velvet and tiramisu cakes encased in delicious chocolate shells. If you prefer something standard but with a bit of razzle-dazzle, order assorted cakes and get them served on a movable merry-go-round. Cute! Wash everything down with a refreshing tea or hand-brewed coffee.
Cotelato, #01-01, HillV2, 4 Hillview Rise, Singapore 667979
4. Elixir
Not many places in Singapore execute dual F&B concepts; Elixir is one spot that does it very well. What can you get here? Drop by during the day, where it functions as a chic cafe serving all your brunch faves and top-notch coffee. Order the spicy Korean chicken, avocado toast, and truffle fries for sharing. Don’t forget the bruleed French toast for something sweet! If you can stick around till nighttime, you’ll witness the space transform into a cool pizza and wine bar. When two become one…
Elixir, #01-18, Holland Parksuites, 24 Holland Grove Road, Singapore 278803
5. Choupinette
This quaint cafe is a well-known establishment in the Bukit Timah enclave, having been around for over two decades. Here’s where you can get anything and everything French: onion soup, le croque monsieur and madame, duck confit, and more. Bonus points for being a pet-friendly space, which is welcoming news for everyone who can’t bear to leave their furkids behind. Fun fact: our law minister once dined here (and I was seated behind him), which means this place is legit.
Choupinette, 607 Bukit Timah Road, Singapore 269708
6. Jimmy Monkey Cafe & Bar
Look up “best cafes in the west of Singapore” and you’ll most likely see these folks on almost every list. This stalwart boasts hearty all-day brunch staples that never disappoint and coffee from top farms worldwide. Cafe hoppers can come alone or in a group and while the day away at this chill and cosy flagship outlet.
Jimmy Monkey Cafe & Bar, #01-51, One-North Residences, 9 One-North Gateway, Singapore 138643
7. Atlas Coffeehouse
You should know this cafe, which is a stone’s throw from Botanic Gardens MRT station. Its industrial interior goes hand-in-hand with its name, which stands for “At Land Air Sea” (we Singaporeans love our acronyms). Early birds can lap up brunch options like spicy pork chorizo with eggs and smashed avocado, buttermilk waffles, and pancakes with passion fruit curd. Past 11am, diners can chow down on steak sandwiches, salmon soba bowls, madeleines made of French butter, and sticky date pudding.
Atlas Coffeehouse, 6 Duke’s Road, Singapore 268886
8. Coexist Coffee Co.
In 2021, this rooftop cafe opened to much fanfare, only for it to close down in 2023… and then reopen in the same spot a few months later. We hope it’s here to stay this time around. The iconic white and red split interior has been replaced with an all-grey minimalist look, while the revamped menu focuses on modern Singaporean fare like chilli crab shakshuka, laksa fish and chips, and Milo Swiss roll. Fans of the squid ink fried rice, worry not: it’s on the menu, too.
Coexist Coffee Co., #08-00, Rooftop Coffee Studio, 48 Hillview Terrace, Singapore 669269
9. Time Table Cafe
For cafe addicts, time moves at a much slower pace in these brunch spots, so don’t rush them while they slowly sip their coffee and perfect that flat lay for their food shots. This cafe in Singapore’s west side is the perfect spot for long catch-ups – you can spill the tea while enjoying smoked salmon baked rice, seafood pizzas, affogatos, and mango frappuccinos.
Time Table Cafe, #01-726, 456 Jurong West Street 41, Singapore 640456
10. No Horse Run Cafe
The name may be a little odd – it’s a translation from a Hokkien phrase which means “in a league of its own” – but its offerings are not. After a successful run in Yishun, No Horse Run has expanded its presence with a second outlet at Choa Chu Kang. A roomier space means patrons can expect more from the menu, and that’s exactly what they’ll get. Besides gelato, you can feast on savoury dishes like eggs Benedict, pasta, and even Sarawak-style kolo mee. The best part? It’s open till 2am daily.
No Horse Run Cafe, #01-21, 50A Choa Chu Kang Loop, Singapore 689959
11. Beans & Cream
There’s something about heartland cafes that sits right with us. Is it because they’re not trying hard to impress you? Perhaps it’s the affordable prices, which is laudable, given the current economy. There aren’t a lot of flavours to choose from, but rest assured, you get more bang for your buck. Beans & Cream is a hit with the residents here, and ‘cos we’re not in the business of gatekeeping, it’s a cafe you should drop by if you’re ever in the vicinity.
Beans & Cream, #01-260, 347 Bukit Batok Street 34, Singapore 650347
12. Hey Sugar
Who knew this backwater neighbourhood Choa Chu Kang had another cafe worth visiting? Surprise! Let’s talk about the decor: we love the pastel pink walls, which perfectly complement the wood furniture. Choose from 14 flavours, which you can enjoy in an ice cream cone, bowl, or paired with charcoal or red velvet waffles. Don’t forget to add the refreshing strawberry elderflower iced brewed shaken tea to your order.
Hey Sugar, #01-06, 818 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1, Singapore 680818
