Are skin exosome facials the next big thing in skincare?
From chemical peels to microdermabrasion, there are countless treatments touting incredible benefits for the skin. But I’ve long been hesitant to take the plunge when many skin transforming procedures come with the possibility of discomfort and a significant down time. So when I heard that a new pain-free treatment made its way to BMF – The Aesthetics People, I was curious to try it out.
Enter: the all-new Skin Exosomes Express Therapy. This facial treatment makes use of topical exosomes, which are extracted from human stem cells and infused into the skin using a gentle microneedling process. It’s said to revitalise the skin for a more radiant, clear complexion. Glow-boosting, painless and no downtime? I gladly signed up for a trial.
The prep: a face scan and consultation
“Do you struggle with enlarged pores?” The consultant asked when I sat down. Of course, she would know – we had just completed a thorough face scan before entering the private consultation room. In what looked like a light box used for product photography, she took snapshots of my face and ran them through a system. These detailed photos revealed everything from my skin’s hydration levels to the state of my pores.
The verdict: enlarged pores, oily skin and not enough UV protection (note to self: less is not more when it comes to sunscreen!). The consultant also asked about any other skin concerns I had and gave me a brief lowdown about the facial. Next, I was sent off to the treatment room.
The facial: Skin Exosomes Express Therapy
After settling into the comfy bed all tucked into a cosy blanket, the facial began with a relaxing neck, face and shoulder massage, plus a dose of aromatherapy that calmed my nerves. I resisted the urge to doze off as the facial therapist cleansed and exfoliated my skin. This was followed by a brief steam sesh to open up my pores before a light extraction.
Now, it was time for the highlight. The therapist gently massaged a skin exosomes serum onto my skin. For it to penetrate into the skin’s dermis and stimulate collagen production, a microneedling machine was used. Specifically, advanced microneedling using monopolar radiofrequency, a type of microneedling treatment designed to produce the best results in the shortest time possible. Since it was my first time, she used the most gentle setting on my skin. The loud sound of the machine was slightly alarming at first, but I’m pleased to report that I felt no pain at all.
After about 20 minutes of microneedling on my face and neck, I was treated to a soothing face mask, followed by toner, essence and moisturiser. Finally, a head and shoulder massage before the treatment ended with the therapist handing me a cup of warm herbal tea with a smile – I loved the hospitality here!
Overall, it was a comfortable and gentle facial treatment that left my skin looking more supple and feeling rejuvenated. I can’t say that the issue with enlarged pores was entirely sorted, but I reckon that’ll take a few rounds of treatment to tackle. I was under and out in about two hours, and there was no redness at all despite the microneedling just a few minutes ago. That said, I won’t recommend planning any major events right after the treatment. I noticed that my skin was purging for about a week following the treatment, though it cleared up soon after.
With zero pain, I’d say it’s suitable for facial fanatics and newbies alike. If clear skin and a radiant glow is what you’re after, the therapist suggests a few rounds of treatment for optimal results. The therapist and consultants were incredibly warm and helpful at every step of the way. They also gave me tips on caring for my skin post-treatment: no sunblock (I was told to stay out of the sun or to wear a cap), makeup, vitamin c products or skincare acids for the next 24 hours.
The post-facial skincare: Elixir Platinum Serum
Beyond the skin exosome facial, I brought home a bottle of the Elixir Platinum Serum, which was recommended as the ideal post-treatment addition to my skincare. This lightweight serum contains a cocktail of radiance-enhancing, anti-aging peptides and active ingredients. With a fast-absorbing, hydrating and non-sticky formula, this quickly became a staple in my beauty routine.
