We’ve got intel on a radiofrequency microneedling and laser treatment that’s recommended for acne scars, skin lifting and skin texture improvement. Read on for our first-timer review.
From pesky dark spots to pitted acne scars, the road to achieving clear and flawless skin can seem like a never-ending battle. And let’s be real; these frustrating skin woes can gradually prick at our confidence over time. But thanks to strides in beauty and skincare, there’s a slew of innovative treatments that can tackle these pain points.
Now, one particular procedure at Evoque Medical Aesthetics has recently caught our eye: the Secret Duo Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling and Erbium Glass Laser treatment. Said to reduce acne scars while offering other benefits (think skin tightening, minimising enlarged pores and anti-ageing effects), we simply couldn’t pass on the chance to try it for ourselves. Our team member Sufyan took the leap of faith for his first RF microneedling experience and spilled all the deets below – yes, including how painful it actually is!
Taking a deep look at the skin…
Comprehensive, informative (without being overly technical) and hospitable. This was how Sufyan described his overall experience at Evoque Medical Aesthetics. The session began with a thorough consultation after taking 3D images of his skin. Sufyan’s concerns included acne scarring and enlarged pores, which were then analysed by founder and medical director, Dr Sanjay Ganhasan.
Sufyan tells us, “I was amazed at how in-depth the clinic analysed my skin, examining areas like wrinkles, pores, evenness, brown spots and red spots.” Fun fact: Dr Sanjay boasts over 10 years of medical experience and aesthetic training experience in South Korea, so he knew he was in great hands!
Based on his skin woes, Dr Sanjay recommended the Secret Duo treatment which leverages both RF Microneedling and Erbium Glass Laser to tackle stubborn acne scars. RF Microneedling creates microwounds in the skin by using fine needles alongside radiofrequency waves. When the skin heals, this triggers the production of elastin and collagen, allowing a skin remodelling effect. This is coupled with the Erbium Glass Laser treatment, which uses fractional laser technology to create microdamage in the deeper skin layers. It also triggers the skin’s natural healing process, resulting in smoother, firmer and more youthful-looking skin.
The perks of combining these two treatments in one? A much gentler procedure, with significantly reduced downtime and recovery time. Dr Sanjay shared that a course of six sessions is recommended for best results, though effectiveness may vary for individuals.
Skin revival starts now!
Now, for the big reveal: how painful is the treatment? As a first-timer undergoing RF microneedling, Sufyan described it as having a colony of ants descend on your face. He tells us that the sensation felt stronger in the cheek and chin areas, but became more bearable around his eyes, nose and forehead. Noting how everyone has a different pain tolerance, he added a caveat that the level of discomfort may vary for each person.
Before you freak out about the pain factor, rest assured that a topical anaesthetic cream will be generously applied prior to the treatment. And if pain is your ultimate nemesis, here’s another pro tip from Dr Sanjay: take paracetamol 30 minutes before your session to enhance your comfort level.
Post-microneedling, heat was delivered to the treated areas to stimulate collagen production. “It felt like someone was pointing a hair dryer to my face, alternating between the hot and cool settings,” Sufyan says, adding that the cool air made the treatment more soothing.
The moment of truth: Our verdict
Within an hour (inclusive of 30 minutes for the numbing cream to settle), the treatment was done and dusted. As promised, Sufyan was up and ready to take on the rest of his day – barring some redness and swelling that subsided within four hours.
He was also pleased to share that one of his more prominent scars seemed less obvious within a day of the treatment. Plus, his eye area looked more taut and lifted. As Sufyan had more shallow scarring, Dr Sanjay recommended a monthly session over at least six months to maintain the results.
So, would we recommend giving this treatment a go? Yes, if you’re looking for a minimally invasive treatment with reduced downtime. “This could be a good option especially for those with more shallow scarring as you’ll require fewer sessions for maintenance,” Sufyan adds. Psst: we hear he has already pencilled it into his laundry list of grooming to-dos…
