Always wanted to visit Morocco? Bookmark our guide to the top things to do and see in the North African country.
Your plan to live it up like a jet setter is finally coming to fruition – sublime! But do you need help determining where to travel in 2024? A country you should highly consider is the Kingdom of Morocco. One of this year’s trending destinations, the North African marvel is a heady mix of lively cities, vibrant influences, and fascinating sights. Here’s what you can expect to see and all the top things to do in Morocco.
Before you start planning, here are two things to note. Firstly, even though Morocco is a year-round destination, the heat can be scorching during summer. We recommend visiting when the weather’s milder, which is during spring (March and April) and autumn (September to November). Secondly, as Morocco is an Islamic country, travellers are encouraged to dress modestly.
Top things to do and see in Morocco
1. Pretend to be an old Hollywood star at a Unesco heritage site
The Mummy. Gladiator. Prince of Persia. Game of Thrones. What do these shows have in common? All of them were shot on location at this historic ksar (fortified village). A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1987, Ait Benhaddou comprises earth-toned buildings made of rammed earth, adobe, clay bricks, and wood. The sparsely inhabited village sits at the foot of Atlas Mountain, along the former caravan route between the Sahara Desert and Marrakech. This breathtaking site makes the perfect backdrop for your photos and videos.
2. Bask in Fint Oasis’ lush, green paradise
If you plan to visit Ait Benhaddou, add this locale to your itinerary. Fint Oasis consists of four traditional villages and serves as another set for various Hollywood blockbusters. Still largely undiscovered by tourists (which is a good thing), this tranquil oasis is where you’ll only hear your footsteps and placid running creek water over the rocks.
If a local approaches you, consider taking up their offer of an impromptu tour. You might discover something unexpected. Psst: don’t forget to leave your guide a tip if you engage their services!
3. Wander around the famous blue city
We bet you’ve come across Chefchaouen, aka Morocco’s “Blue Pearl”, at least once on your Instagram feed. Located in the Rif Mountains, this charming city is a captivating canvas painted in various shades of blue.
It’s said this colour scheme originated from Jewish traditions, as it symbolises the sky and heaven. Every corner is a waiting photo opp, so be sure to clear enough space on your phone. Don’t forget to check out the Grand Mosque, Spanish Mosque, and the Kasbah Museum while you’re here.
4. Pay Jardin Majorelle a visit and check out the plants
Here’s another famous attraction that heavily features the colour blue. A brief history about Jardin Majorelle: the garden was created by French painter Jacques Majorelle in 1923; over a period of forty years, the artist painted the buildings and grew over 100 plant species.
After Jacques’ death, fashion designer Yves-Saint Laurent (yes, the one and only) and business partner Pierre Berge purchased the site and restored it as per the artist’s vision. If you intend to visit, make sure you’re there super early – it’s a well-known tourist spot, after all.
5. Enjoy a relaxing bath at the hammams
When in Morocco, do as the Moroccans do – that includes taking a relaxing bath at one of the many hammams throughout the country. When we say bath, it’s actually more than that. Think of it as a rejuvenating spa experience where you get to deep cleanse before hanging out in the sauna rooms. Whether you’re travelling solo or with a group of friends, this is a good spot to unwind.
One highly recommended hammam is Gaia Spa in Casablanca, where couples can enjoy romantic relaxation. Spa-goers can also look forward to a plethora of massages and even get their nails done.
6. Do go chasing the Ouzoud Waterfalls
How about another spot where you can be one with nature? One of the best things to do in Morocco is take a day trip to the Ouzoud Falls, around three hours away from Marrakech. This popular site features a three-tiered waterfall cascading over the El-Abid River gorge. It’s truly a sight to behold. These falls add up to 110 metres in height, with the longest drop being 75 metres. Leave the sandals in your hotel and wear shoes with a good grip. While you’re here, hike down to the bottom of the falls and enjoy a lovely dip before breaking for lunch.
7. Soak up this coastal town’s laidback vibes
Morocco’s cities are great and all, but if you’re seriously in need of some R&R, escape to Essaouira, a coastal town on the country’s Atlantic coast. This seaside destination is all about beautiful beaches, historic architecture, and a bustling arts scene. Are you into surfing? Well, you’re in luck – here’s where you can ride the waves with the wind in your hair. Otherwise, just lay a towel on the sand, slap on loads of sunscreen, and enjoy a quiet afternoon bathing in the sun.
If you happen to be here at the end of June, remember to check out Gnaoua World Music Festival, the town’s annual music festival. Also, be on the lookout for the tree-climbing goats. They’re a riot!
8. Explore the Switzerland of Morocco
Now you don’t have to travel all the way to the central European country to experience its splendour: Ifrane is Switzerland’s destination dupe equivalent! Commonly referred to as “Little Switzerland”, Ifrane’s architecture sets it apart from the other Moroccan cities.
The French built the town in 1929 as a summer getaway; today, it remains an elegant holiday destination for locals and tourists alike. There are so many things to “ooh” and “ahh” over, from the Alpine chalets and lush forests to the sports resort with five ski slopes and the gorgeous Al Akhawayn University.
9. Get your fill of Moroccan cuisine
One thing we love about being overseas is all the international cuisines we can stuff our faces with. Moroccan food is a melting pot of various cultures and influences, including the Arabs, Ottoman Turks, and the French. The best place to find the best bites is in Fez, the country’s second-largest city. You can find anything and everything from street food to top-rated restaurants here. If you’re up to it, sign up for Fez Food Experience, a walking food tour where you’ll learn about the city’s culinary history and sample a few dishes.
10. Check out preserved Roman ruins
This one’s for the history buffs. We recommend allotting some time in your itinerary to visit Volubilis, a preserved archaeological site in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. These ancient ruins offer a glimpse into Morocco’s past. The site was founded in the third century BC and served as a hub for trade and commerce.
Walk around and marvel at the grand structures, which include impressive arches, stunning mosaic floors, and temples dedicated to Roman gods. There’s also an on-site museum where you can discover more about the Unesco heritage site.
