Will this trending lewk ever go out of style? We don’t think so. Here’s how you can achieve the dark academia aesthetic.
The dark academia aesthetic is one fashion trend we just can’t get enough of. This gothic spin on the classic Oxford look has remained pretty timeless over the years. And we see plenty of it on social media channels of the trendiest fashionistas, as well as in popular TV shows like A Series of Unfortunate Events, and the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
But what is the dark academia aesthetic, exactly? It’s very similar to the ‘fits you’d find on European students in the 19th century. Or the uniforms you see in elite colleges, but darker and moodier. Think preppy but possibly unhappy. Sold on the whole lewk? This is how to rock it.
How to achieve the dark academia aesthetic
1. Embrace your dark side
First, let’s talk shades. If you’re into pastels and blinding neon colours, we’re sorry to say it won’t work in this case. Pick clothing with dark or muted tones to achieve that intelligent yet mysterious vibe that comes with the whole dark academia aesthetic. Rust red, brown, black, grey, beige and white shades are perfect. We take inspiration from Daniel Radcliffe’s wardrobe in the film Kill Your Darlings. Yes, the one where his character funnily looks more like Harry Potter than he ever did in the Harry Potter movie series.
2. Make things pop with vintage accessories
The next thing you’ll need is plenty of accessories. But they’ve got to be vintage, or at least look the part. Think jewellery from your parents (or grandparents) that you can borrow and wear. Like tortoise eyeglasses, pearl necklaces and pendant brooches. We love trawling through Etsy for cool secondhand finds as well. Just take a look under ‘vintage accessories’.
3. Dress like you’re always freezing
Layering is key for the dark academia aesthetic. Collect lots of collared blouses, button-ups and turtlenecks to start with. Then finish the look with outerwear – preferably a blazer, cardigan or sweater vest. If you need a visual image, just think of Five from The Umbrella Academy. We guarantee you’ll be turning heads on the street. Wanna shop sustainably while doing so? Invest in pre-loved items from thrift shops or platforms like Carousell.
4. Mini skirts, but make them plaid
Mini skirts are a wardrobe staple in the dark academia aesthetic. But not just any – they have to be ribbed or pleated, and they almost always feature plaid or tweed prints to give that school uniform vibe. We’re loving this dark green wool blend mini skirt from Uniqlo. But if you want something that’s a little safer, try these smart skorts instead.
5. Don preppy footwear
Before you head out the door, you’ve gotta complete the lewk with some preppy footwear. Think classic Oxford shoes, loafers and boots. If you want something that’s long-lasting and worth the money, we recommend getting gorgeous chunky Mary Janes from Doc Martens. This beautiful pair of penny loafers from Charles & Keith does the trick as well.
Now go forth and rock the dark academia aesthetic!
