What you can expect: Trippy dreamscapes and illuminated fun

First stop: ARIA – The Breath Immersive Experience by Pepper’s Ghost studio. This installation features stunning kaleidoscopic visuals paired with an ethereal soundtrack, creating a multi-sensory space where breath, sound, and motion intertwine. It’s a slightly surreal, dreamlike experience that invites you to pause and immerse yourself fully. We recommend visiting during off-peak hours for a more serene and uninterrupted exploration.

Then came Cloud Swing by Lindsay Glatz and Curious Form, which had us for a ride on glowing swings suspended from illuminated clouds. It’s giving Studio Ghibli meets light therapy. Note: there are only three swings, so brace yourself for the photo queue. You’ve been warned.
If ball pits are up your alley, dive right into Hypercosmo by Hyperstudio – and be sure to stay for the light, motion, and sound show that sees balls of light dancing across the space. We reckon this would be another Instagram hot spot…
Creating art, collectively

Most of the interactive elements in this exhibition were quite simple, and honestly, we were looking forward to a little more novelty. But sometimes, less is more: ADA by Karina Smigla-Bobinski caught our attention with how its uncomplicated execution led to a cool piece of collective art. Here, we channelled our inner artist (read: chased a giant spiky PVC sphere around a white room). Each movement left charcoal trails on the walls, turning the space into a chaotic canvas.
Quiet(er) moments we enjoyed
If you need a break from all the stimulation, we found several installations that offer a more calming and reflective experience.

10 Agosto by Hyperstudio featured swings gently suspended from a circular frame and surrounded by soft lights and dreamy mist; while A Quiet Storm by Quiet Ensemble plunged us into near darkness, only to reveal a flurry of floating soap bubbles catching the light (psst: watch your step as the floor can be slippery from all the soap).

For a dose of dreamy pastel hues, step into Glowing Ballet by Hyperstudio and Mauro Pace, where swirling balloons create an otherworldly sea. Prefer something more dynamic? Venture into Soft Hurricane by Quiet Ensemble, where balloons drift and dance dramatically with gusts of wind, turning the space into a playful, ever-changing spectacle.
Turn up the whimsy

We spied a few cheeky, quirky, and whimsical installations too. Spiritus Sonata by ENESS was a world of glowing inflatables shaped like characters straight out of Studio Ghibli. The Goofs by Filthy Luker featured towering inflatable characters with googly eyes. Finally, The GINJOS by Rub Kandy added to the quirky energy, staring at you with wide-eyed wonder.
Our verdict: Is Pop Air by Balloon Museum worth a visit?

Pop Air – Art is Inflatable provided moments of delight and intrigue, but we wished there were more novel elements given the price tag of $48 to $63 per adult (including taxes). We’ve seen similar or comparable exhibitions involving ball pits and artworks that activate with kinetic energy in previous installations of i Light, at Museum of Ice Cream, and Bubble Planet, with lower price tags or even free (for i Light).
We’d recommend this most for families with young kids: the little ones would have a ball of a time with the colourful elements and larger-than-life artworks. There’s also a gift shop at the end for cute memorabilia, and a cafe to grab a bite before you end your exploration with the fam.

That’s not to say that adults won’t have fun here, though. If you’re one for balloons and don’t mind the price, you could pop by for a bit of fun and to snap a pic or two. And hey, it could even be a cool first date idea.
Heads up for those who are visiting for the ‘gram: be prepared to wait as some spaces and artworks are fairly compact. For instance, there are only three swings at Cloud Swing, so expect a queue, especially on weekends.
Overall, while Pop Air by Balloon Museum didn’t quite blow us away, it did lift our spirits for a couple of hours – and there’s something to be said for having a dose of childlike fun in a sea of balloons…
