The viral dessert brand

Part of the brand’s allure lies in its rarity: Cheese Wonder began in 2021 as a dessert with limited-time drops. It was initially only available online, with drops launching at 8pm every Friday and Saturday (and through exclusive pop-ups) in Japan, earning it an ‘if you know, you know’ status among the dessert-loving crowd. The brand grew its cult following through its covetable cheesecake and desserts over the years, with thousands of people queuing up for its sweet treats and online sales selling out in minutes.
Cheese Wonder review: A cheesecake with a soufflé surprise

The OG Cheese Wonder is the brand’s most popular item for good reason. After our taste test, it’s definitely the item that we’d rate the highest. This tart (from $35.90 for four pieces in a signature thermal bag) features a two-layered creation: a rich, soufflé-style base topped with a fluffy, airy mousse. The cheese is rich, creamy, and delectable – and the secret lies in the Hokkaido milk and butter used to make it.
An unexpected standout? The almond-flavoured cookie base that stole our hearts. It’s delightfully crumbly, slightly nutty, and complements the creamy mousse perfectly. We’d gladly have it as a cookie on its own!

This viral cheese tart is marketed with three ways to eat it, so naturally, we had to try it at different temperatures. It offers a firm bite that’s almost like ice cream when frozen, while it becomes a little creamier when left to sit out for a little longer. Fully thawed, it turns much softer.
That said, you could say that most tarts could also be enjoyed frozen, slightly thawed, or fully thawed – so this wasn’t much of a differentiation factor in our books. And if you’re wondering, we unanimously preferred both the original and the strawberry tarts frozen.
Red strawberry: A seasonal pink delight

Next up, the seasonal Red Strawberry ($42.90 for four pieces). This pretty-in-pink tart yielded mixed reviews from our team. The strawberry flavour isn’t pronounced, but the strawberry centre (which felt like biting into a popsicle when frozen) offsets the richness of the cheese, making it a much lighter bite than the original.
It’s perfect if you’re after a less-heavy dessert, but not so great if you’re expecting to taste the savouriness of the Hokkaido cheese and the fruitiness of the strawberries.
Fresh cream cheese in the Wonder Sand cookie

The third item on the menu at this compact pop-up is the Wonder Sand cookie ($35.90 for eight pieces), a crisp almond cookie cheese sandwich. Its filling is made with fresh buttercream and fresh cheese cream, which features two types of cheese from Hokkaido. Intriguingly, this creamy cheese filling reminded us of white chocolate!
We wished the cookie were made with the same cookie base as the tarts, but alas, this tasted different. Nonetheless, it was a pretty enjoyable treat.
Is Cheese Wonder worth the queue in Singapore?

We’d say Cheese Wonder might be worth the queue once, especially if you’re a fan of Japanese cheese desserts and you’re curious for a taste. But for the price and wait, it’s a tad overhyped, in our opinion. Overall, the taste is reminiscent of many popular Japanese cheese snacks, just slightly elevated.
