Causeway Bay restaurants: Where to eat
1. Shari Shari Kakigori House

In a city that’s no stranger to a few scorching months out of the year, indulging in some shaved ice is more than a few Hong Kongers’ cool-down method of choice. A crowd favourite (evidenced by the queue often found outside), Shari Shari Kakigori House specialises in Japanese shaved ice (kakigori) that’s as photogenic as it is delicious. These sweet behemoths of fluffy ice come in a wide range of flavours, including a few seasonal hits. The Strawberries Special is a particularly delicious pick with its delightful candy-pink colour.
Shari Shari Kakigori House (Causeway Bay), G/F, 13 Caroline Hill Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, p. 2529 1223
2. Yorucho

When I’m craving for izakaya vibes Causeway Bay with an innovative twist, I go to the recently opened Yorucho. With a minimalist and fairly traditional interior, this establishment offers a menu with quite the opposite personality to its appearances. Think nori tacos with red prawn oil and kiwi glaze for robata-grilled options. Classics like sushi and sashimi dishes are also top-notch. The restaurant hides within a speakeasy named Madara, where you can enjoy nostalgic tipples with Japanese twists.
Must-try items: Ox Tongue, Sweetcorn Tempura, 72-hour Beef Bone Soup Noodle
How much: From $401 per person
Opening hours: Tue – Sun, 6pm – 11pm
Phone number: 8401 3785

3. Little Bao Diner

A little bao here and a little bao there – it’s tough to pick a favourite from top Hong Kong chef May Chow’s Little Bao Diner. The Pork Belly Bao is always a fave of ours, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you should try the Sloppy Chan Bao or the Poached Beef Tongue Pickled Ginger Salad from the June 2024 seasonal menu. In addition to scrumptious sides like the Drunken Clams and Shrimp Tacos, the Menu for Two option is a great deal for maximum eats with minimal spending. Make sure you top off your meal with a dessert bao, though be warned: if you take too long to Instagram your ice-cream bao, it’ll melt before you can get a bite in!

4. Roganic

With such a wide range of wallet-friendly options, Causeway Bay is less known for its fine dine offerings, but I continuously visit the neighbourhood just to enjoy an always mindblowing experience at Roganicdelivers. With a focus on seasonality and sustainability, this Michelin-starred kitchen (that also has a Michelin Green Star in its pocket) consistently presents modern British creations that arouse all your senses, marrying premium produce with innovative techniques that prove, time and time again, why, under the leadership of Simon Rogan, Chef Oli Marlow and his team remain the trailblazers in the culinary realm of our city. This is honestly the best restaurant to visit if you’re looking for non-alcoholic beverage pairing for food – even wine enthusiasts are known to opt for the unique mocktail-style concoctions when they visit this establishment.

5. Aire

Summer always makes me crave an icy tipple of sangria, and recently I’ve been running to Aire to get my fix! With an expansive terrace, you can enjoy comfortable alfresco dining at this Spanish establishment in a city where open space is limited. I love the lively Mediterranean ambiance and warm Iberian hospitality that mirror the fiery flavours of Basque grill specialties found on the menu – a meal here feels like you’ve been transported to Basque Country for a mini vacay. Located within Lee Garden Three, the restaurant has a minimal but sophisticated aesthetic, making it a versatile venue for everyday and special occasions. Led by Executive Chef Manav Tuli, previously from the acclaimed CHAAT, Leela offers modern reimagination of traditional, sometimes ancient, recipes from different regions of India. 13. Unagi Yondaime Kikukawai

No fuss, no frills, Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa does one thing and does it fantastically – traditional Japanese eel gastronomy. The presentation of every dish is so perfect, you’d think you’re eating straight out of a Ghibli anime food scene. My favourite thing to order here is the “Ichihonju” set features a whole grilled eel. Grilled to absolute perfection, the eel is tender with just the right chew and dressed in a rich umami glaze with crispy charred edges all around the fish. My advice is: run, don’t walk!

This quaint little shop masterfully blends the art of Italian gelato with unique local and Cantonese-inspired flavours. Each scoop is rich and creamy in consistency and explodes with flavour in every lick.
