Ready for glowy, youthful skin? Said to tackle various skin woes from pesky lines to stubborn acne scars, read on for a first-timer’s thoughts on the handpick microneedling facial at Spa Esprit.
In the ever-evolving world of beauty, keeping up with endless trends like skin flooding and intricate 10-step routines can seem like a lot. Amid this whirlwind, one trend that has recently caught my eye is facial microneedling. A quick search online revealed its ability to tackle a range of skin woes (think: dullness, hyperpigmentation and pesky fine lines) for a more radiant look. The thought of having needles prick my face sounded a bit intimidating, but when the chance to try out this raved-about treatment at Spa Esprit came up, I thought it was worth a shot. Here’s everything that unfolded during my first microneedling facial:
Let’s talk first impressions
When I stepped into Spa Esprit, I was instantly transported to a serene oasis. The staff warmly welcomed me and introduced my treatment for the day: a 75-minute handpick microneedling facial, also known as collagen induction therapy. This minimally invasive procedure works by creating controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface using fine needles, triggering the skin’s self-repair process. As the skin heals, it amps up the production of growth factors like collagen, elastin and key proteins, granting a more youthful look. An added plus? Microneedling is suitable for almost all skin types, except those with sensitive skin or are suffering from conditions like eczema, rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis.
Delving beneath the skin
I was then led to the treatment room where I met Sharon, my therapist of the day. Psst: expect utmost professionalism and service, as we hear all therapists have to undergo at least eight hours of training, working with three practice models! After a rundown of the procedure, we started with a gentle inhalation process and thorough makeup cleanse. What’s great is that Spa Esprit focuses on a personalised approach, where the therapist will conduct an analysis to identify your skin needs before recommending a treatment formula.
While I was aware of my skin’s dryness, she pointed out an uneven skin tone which came as a surprise to me. To give my dull skin a much-needed luminous boost, she recommended the AnteAGE brightening microneedling solution. Beyond brightening, Spa Esprit also offers serums that target dark spots, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and even stretch marks, scars and keloids.
As a final prep, I had my skin exfoliated to remove any dead skin cells, followed by a light extraction to unclog my pores. My face was also numbed using hyaluronic acid gel and the Smartline machine, before the application of the brightening serum.
Enter: the star of the treatment
Now, we’re ready for the microneedling magic. Using the new-age dermapen, a hand-held device with multiple fine needles, efficient and precise tiny punctures will be made on the skin’s surface. Depending on individual skin needs and comfort levels, it can be adjusted to depths between 0.25mm and 2.5mm, and across five speed settings. Sharon reassured me that newbies to microneedling often start with the shallowest depth (phew!).
For someone with low pain tolerance, the overall experience was surprisingly comfortable. Not only was Sharon incredibly gentle, she pre-empted me before moving on to more sensitive areas (like the forehead and cheekbones) so I could brace myself for any discomfort. Although I felt more pressure in certain spots, it was mostly a mild and bearable tingling sensation. Before I knew it, I was on to the last leg of the facial: rehydrating with a healing mask and cooling gel, plus an invigorating neck and shoulder massage.
On to the results!
Trust me when I say I was blown away. My skin appeared plump and rejuvenated, with minimal redness. As with most cosmetic procedures, some downtime is to be expected. Sharon shared aftercare instructions, such as avoiding sun exposure, hot showers, steam and exercising for 24 hours, and laying off make-up and skin-stimulating products. In the week after, my skin looked visibly less congested and some friends even complimented a noticeable radiance in my complexion. It’s safe to say that I’m sold on microneedling as a way towards achieving more youthful, glowy skin!
