Hot or not? Capris and jelly shoes are back… and so are many ‘love it or hate it’ fashion trends in 2024.
Fashion’s trend machine is ever-spinning, and this year is no exception. We’ve been spotting trends from years ago popping up on our social media feeds, with some taking a new spin. In particular, we’re seeing a wave of controversial fashion trends in 2024 that are making us question whether we should embrace or resist them. Here’s a breakdown of the hottest (and most debated) styles that are hitting the streets…
1. It’s time for capri (pants, not Italy)
We don’t like to admit it, but capri pants are back, and they’re coming for your casual wear and workwear wardrobe. It’s not the easiest to style, so we’re taking notes from the fashion set on how to make this look good…
2. See through these shoes
Mesh, see-through flats are here, though they’re probably staying for the foreseeable future in the fashion scene. We love a comfy footwear moment, but do we really want to show off our toes through busy patterns and mesh? And what do we do about the socks (and sweat) situation? So many questions.
3. Do it for the memes
Maybe it’s the Zendaya effect, or maybe it’s the return of the noughties. Tongue-in-cheek slogan and graphic tees are returning in full force, emblazoned across the tees of celebs and fashion influencers alike. Some say passé, but we’ll take it if Z approves.
4. Striped pants: stylish or sleepy?
We can’t tell if this comfy style (especially the linen variety) looks chic or too pyjama-esque for the streets. When in doubt, get the tailored version, and dress it up with heels or a blazer to make it office-appropriate.
5. Equestrian chic isn’t horsing around
We thought it was just another micro-trend, but fashion’s equestrian era doesn’t seem to be over just yet. This controversial fashion trend has been spotted on celebs and music festival-goers alike. The question is, where in Singapore can we find the occasion to don cowboy hats and boots? Asking for a friend.
6. Are you jelly over these?
Jelly shoes are now runway-approved – if The Row’s Mara flats are any indication. And the fashion set is taking heed. From slides to sandals, we’re seeing more stylish peeps donning the jelly aesthetic on their feet (and IG feed).
7. Midi skirts are bubblin’
Bubble skirts are back, but not just the mini kind. Take the hemlines down to your calves with midi iterations of this 90s fave. Do we prefer this over the mini bubble skirt? We’re undecided, but they do look chic when paired with the ever-popular vest tops.
8. Belts, either under or oversized
If you like to keep things in moderation, you won’t like these belts. It’s either the barely-there cord belt or the all-out waist huggers lately. Skinny cord belts remind us of a grown-up version of the shoelace-as-a-belt trend, while oversized numbers make for an OTT statement. Pick a side – or don’t, and just add both to your rotation.
Are these controversial fashion trends hot or not? You decide.
