Canggu is the trendiest area in the whole of Bali. And what makes a neighbourhood cool enough is the variety of decent coffee joints. We’ve picked five of the best cafes in Canggu that caffeinate us just the way we like it.
Grocer & Grind
Seminyak export to Canggu, this Scandinavian-cool cafe is located 50 metres off the world-famous surfing spot Echo Beach. The early mornings here are the best: watch the surfers slapping neon zinc on their faces and heading to the beach while sipping your latte. Or pop in late afternoon for a sweet treat: chocolate mud cake or thick caramel slice go perfectly with cappuccino and the generously airconditioned room is a lifesaver on a screaming hot tropical day.
Grocer & Grind, Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan (Echo Beach), Sea Sentosa Complex, p. +6203618469189, , email@example.com. Open daily 7am-10pm.
Made of a concrete box with zero frills, Crate cafe is so hip it hurts: this all-day-brekkie spot is the favourite playground of Canggu’s young artistic community. The ‘in’ joke is that you can’t get your coffee here if you are not tattooed – and one doodle on the wrist doesn’t count! Be prepared for a loud, flashy crowd wearing ripped denim, hats and high boots, and driving custom bikes even if they live a stone’s throw away from the cafe. But the coffee – extra-strong, wake-the-dead kind of blend made of Indonesian beans – is worth joining the circus for.
Crate Cafe, Jalan Batu Bolong, 64, Canggu, p. +62 81238943040, e. firstname.lastname@example.org. Open 7am-330pm.
A temple of coffee enthusiasm: the owner, young Indonesian guy, Edo, used to roast beans in his bedroom, and fixed the broken coffee machine he bought online with his own hands before opening a tiny coffee shop. Eventually it became uber-popular with surfers as the breakfasts were the most affordable in the area while the coffee had a real kick. Edo buys different beans from all around the Indonesian archipelago to keep the caffeine aficionados that frequent his coffee shop hooked. The shop just moved to a brand new location with its own micro-roaster and cupping room – a great reward for true passion.
Hungry Bird, Jalan Raya Semat, 86, Canggu, p. 08986191008, e. email@example.com. Open 8am-5pm
Butter Cake & Coffee Shop
Italian coffee culture reigns here: baristas at this boutique coffee shop whip up lattes and cappuccinos based on Illy espresso that’s famous for its silky, oily texture and rich yet smooth aftertaste. Try a signature cuppa served in a Nutella-smeared glass. Pair it with a homemade (like each and every sweet treat in the glass display) flourless chocolate cake with coffee double cream topping, and find out what ‘death by chocolate’ really means.
Butter Cake & Coffee Shop, Jalan Pantai Berawa, 44, Canggu, p. +6281936216983. Open 8am-5pm
Custom-made Indonesian bean blend worked into a perfect cup of strong, bittersweet magic potion. The cup itself is a work of art, too – artisan made by a local ceramic artist. Everything in this coffee shop screams creativity: the hip urban vibe, sketch books with colour pencils provided, inside and outside murals made by young painters from all around the globe. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself sketching something in your notebook after the second piccolo, too!
Ruko, Jalan Pantai Berawa 99, p. 0852 0556 9033. Open 7am-5pm.
