Skullpanda Cage-Uncage Singapore, a new exhibition at the National Museum, brings surreal, immersive rooms, giant sculptures and exclusive merch.
Pop Mart strikes again with Skullpanda Cage-Uncage Singapore, its latest exhibition at the National Museum. Making its international debut in Singapore after a successful launch in Shanghai, the exhibition is an immersive and thought-provoking showcase with stunning life-sized installations. Before we explore the exhibition, here are more art exhibitions in Singapore that caught our eye.
The installations aim to encourage visitors to examine their sense of self-character – the personal choices, contradictions and conflicts that shape our own stories and identities. I checked it out and walked out feeling amazed by the visually impressive installations. They hit me with deeper feels that I didn’t even see coming.

What to expect at the Skullpanda Cage-Uncage showcase

The experience starts before you step into the museum with three massive Skullpandas standing guard at the entrance. Trust me, it’s impossible to miss this absolutely photo-worthy spot. These installations have that universal charm: quirky enough for kids, stylish enough for teens and intriguing enough for everyone else.
The best part? This outdoor installation is free to the public, along with the ones at the entrance area. Take this chance to have a peek at the exhibition before purchasing tickets.
Interactive themed zones

Skullpanda Cage-Uncage unfolds across six dreamy and immersive zones. Inspired by real-life themes, emotion, direction, fortune, rules, life and exploration, it all ties together with recurring motifs like keys, cages, butterflies and more.
Begin your journey at The Key, where suspended locks and keys in floating spheres reflect the tension between perception and truth. There are several Skullpanda figurines after, so be sure to get a closer look at the crazy details.

The Direction zone features a huge book with transparent interactive pages hand-painted by Skullpanda’s artist, Xiong Miao. As you flip through the transparent pages, you can see how the different layers of paintings form a painting of Skullpanda.

Next up, Fortune, a zone containing mirrors and crystals utilised to reflect the duality of wealth as dazzling and confining. You’ll definitely want extra time here for photos because it’s one of the more IG-worthy zones. Pro tip: take advantage of the mirrored floor for that killer Skullpanda reflection shot or the usual mirror selfies.

The next two zones you’ll enter are Rules and Life. These installations explore key themes of time and gravity, as well as discipline through motion and balance. Play around with the Skullpanda-looking weights and watch the scale move. It’s like a see-saw at the playground, but with Skullpandas.
Nearby, you’ll see two turning glass globes that look similar to Skullpanda’s helmet, filled with sand titled Life. One globe features an intricately carved fish, while the other features a flock of birds. This is a meditative exploration, reshaping how we view existence.

The centrepiece and star of the showcase is The Room at the Gallery Theatre. I genuinely felt suffocated the moment I walked in. Two Skullpanda sculptures holding keys, surrounded by an endless reflection of mirrors, were like a maze with no exit. It was visually stunning but felt emotionally weird. Seeing the sculptures “caged”, trapped and repeating forever felt unsettling, but it was undeniably stunning.

Surrounding the two Skullpanda sculptures are these Singapore-exclusive installations, which pay tribute to bird singing – a hobby popular in the past. There’s also a movable tower of blocks, which you can rotate to create various images of the character.
Personally, my top picks are the dazzling crystal room, the interactive rotating tower and the two gigantic Skullpandas that everyone kept crowding around.

Plus, the highly coveted Popopjewellery collection makes its official debut. Expect to find shiny Skullpanda-inspired rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
