Dinosaur animatronics, sky high installations and over 20 million LED lights - light up your night at illumi Singapore.
Singapore by night has a whole different vibe. From supper clubs and late-night cafes to dazzling light shows, the city is a dream for night owls. The newest attraction lighting up the scene is illumi Singapore, the world’s largest light, sound, and multimedia extravaganza.
Fresh from its international debut at the Bayfront Event Space, illumi features jaw-dropping sculptures and animatronics. We squealed over moving dinosaurs and fell in love with whimsical walls of lights adorned with cute bunny figures. Going to visit soon? We rank the nine themed worlds and share tips to help you make the most of your dazzling adventure.
The origins of illumi Singapore
So, what’s the scoop? Created by the masterminds behind Cavalia (remember that epic Cirque du Soleil-style show at The Big White Top in 2014?), illumi debuted in Montreal in 2019 and has since dazzled over 3.5 million visitors. The Singapore edition showcases nine unique worlds, including the showstopper, a 47m-tall illumi Tree. P.S. eco-warriors, rejoice! The team is committed to sustainability, using energy-efficient lighting and recycled materials.
Now, let’s get down to business visiting the different worlds. We hear that each will transform during holiday seasons such as Halloween, Christmas and Chinese New Year, so you can also plan your visit accordingly.
What to expect: We rate the 9 immersive worlds at illumi Singapore
1. The Jurassic Kingdom
Perhaps we’re biased ‘cos we’re major dinosaur lovers. So you can imagine us becoming kids as we were greeted by a roaring T-rex that moves! At the top on our list is The Jurassic Kingdom where you’ll meet dozens of dinosaur sculptures made of lights or lit from within this vast plain. The epic Jurassic Park soundtrack is the icing on the cake.
2. The Dune Palace
From the moment you enter this space, you’re overwhelmed with sensory experiences. Imagine a festival in Aladdin’s Agrabah, where sparkly outlines of palaces and villages are the perfect backdrop over an open souk. Strike a pose with genies and their illuminating lamps, walk through fruit stalls, and dance with villagers. Kids can hop on the Flying Chairs ride for an additional charge.
3. The Magical Forest
Get ready to step into a world straight out of a storybook! Imagine strolling through a wonderland of glowing, rainbow-coloured trees with quirky animal hybrids peeking out from every corner. The underbrush is alive with giant snails, flying squirrels, and playful mushrooms. You’ll walk alongside towering giraffes, elephants, and zebras, while flamboyant flamingos hang out in the trees. It’s the only place where you can safari through a dreamscape, surrounded by magical creatures and dazzling lights.
4. The Infinite Poles
Step into a universe where the North and South Poles are no more, and the lines between them vanish. In this icy wonderland, penguins waddle alongside igloos nestled in a never-ending forest of towering stalagmites. Hang out with polar bears and make yourselves comfy in igloos. Now, if only our tropical Singapore weather fit the theme…
5. Puppies and Kitties
It might just be the most random world ever, but it’s pure heaven for pet lovers. You’ve probably never seen so many cats and dogs in one place. Giant furry guardians stand watch as hundreds of adorable pups and kittens from countless breeds roam freely (we loved spotting them!), playing together in a glowing park. The hilarious soundtrack of barks and meows just adds to the fun.
6. Walls of Lights
Look up and marvel at endless curtains of sparkling snowflakes and twinkling stars lighting up the sky. Giant shimmering crystals, cascading garlands, and towering stalagmites create a magical icy wonderland. Keep an eye out for adorable, glowing rabbit families adding a whimsical touch to this sparkling wonderland.
7. The Enchanted Maple
Never been to Canada? Fret not. Experience the best of Canada’s traditions as vibrant red and orange maple leaves light up the sky, swaying to the rhythm of classic folk tunes. A charming nod to rural life, you’ll spot a cosy chicken coop, barn, and farm animals, including some friendly chickens and horses. Don’t forget to indulge your sweet tooth with a stop at the Sugar Shack for an authentic Canadian treat! Kids can have a ball at the carousel.
8. The illumi Tree
Spot the iconic 47m tree of lights as it dazzles from afar. It’s as tall as five Merlions, leading you to the world’s largest multimedia, sound, and light show. While you’re by the tree, look up and marvel at the stunning butterflies fluttering above.
9. The Tunnel of Colours
This kaleidoscopic corridor is sure to impress. As you move through it, the tunnel transforms reality into a colourful adventure. While it’s placed lower on our list due to the crowds making it tricky to capture its full glory, it’s worth waiting for the perfect shot. Fans of Bridgerton will recognise the soundtrack, “The Four Seasons Recomposed: Spring I,” featured in the last episode of Season 1 (yes, that euphoric rain scene with Daphne Bridgerton).
So, if you’re looking for a fun activity to do in Singapore, hop over to Marina Bay and enjoy this glowing wonderland!
