Who is Jou Sun?
Jou Sun! It means good morning in Cantonese, and the online farmers market has operated for two years in Hong Kong using a zero-inventory and direct-from-source model to deliver the freshest produce from local farms to their customers. Tired of misleading labelling and industralised farming – where consumers are disconnected with food production – they hope to bring back the good old days when families know where their food comes from.
What do they do?
Every morning, the team will drive to local farms and bakeries in Hong Kong to pick up fresh produce, including locally-grown organic vegetables freshly harvested by farmers at Urban Nature in Yuen Long, Tasmanian salmon fillets from a seafood specialist’s warehouse or freshly-baked goods from the famous French bakery Eric Kayser. Jou Sun then packs everything, loads the goodies into the vehicles and delivers them to customers in the afternoon.
What’s available?
All the nutrient-dense dark leafy greens and vegetables such as Chinese kale, choi sum, organic baby spinach and eggplants are big hits on Jou Sun. For fresh fruits, we’re fans of the pink dragon fruit and figs – sometimes it’s hard to locate quality ones on the streets! If you’re more of a meat person, check out their hormone-free pork mince, pork spare ribs and handmade fresh dumplings. Other pantry essentials such as bread, tahini, oat milk and granola snack packs are also available on the online farmers market.
