Considering swapping your gym routine with an exercise that involves outdoor workouts in nature? Why not try running? As you turn away from the TV screen on the treadmill to the stunning mountain views from these hiking trails or hidden running trails in Hong Kong around the city, burning calories can seem like a breeze. So, from crawling through walls, river running to racing after lights out, these Hong Kong running races and events will give you something to work towards in 2024.
Hong Kong running races and events in 2024
1. Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2024

One of the most anticipated annual marathons in Hong Kong, the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon is targeted to be held on 21 January in 2024. Returning as a full-scale event, the runners quota has been increased to 74,000. Run the full, try the half, or sign up for the 10km race as an individual or as a team. This already illustrious event will be further boosted by the Asian Marathon Championships, which the city is hosting for the fifth time.
Top runners from over 45 Asian countries are invited to compete in Hong Kong on the day of the marathon. Additionally, in order to encourage local runners, the “Mr. & Mrs. Super Thousand” special award will grant permanent Hong Kong residents a prize of $10,000 for finishing the marathon under a certain time. Online registration has already commenced, with the increased quota expected to draw many successful entries.

2. Action Asia Events

Love the great outdoors? Action Asia Events hosts regular hikes and runs all over Hong Kong on the city’s famous hiking trails. Its events are suitable for runners of all levels – feel free to choose your category. While there are still a few upcoming scheduled races for 2023 such as the HK50, 2024 will hold events like the Sai Kung 50 on 2 March and the Goodman Healthy Hike & Run on 10 March. Also, Action Asia Events partners with local groups to raise funds to aid the underprivileged and to support nature conservation – what’s not to love?

3. Vibram Hong Kong 100 Ultra Trail Race

It’s time to sign up for the Vibram Hong Kong 100 Ultra Trail Race! The dates of the 2024 HK100 races are from 18 to 21 January, with three varying distances: 103km for the HK100; 56km for The Half; and 33km for The Third. Wanna go extra hard? 4. TransLantau by UTMB (details to be announced for 2024)

One of the latest events to be added to the prestigious Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) World Series, TransLantau may be one of the most anticipated running races in Hong Kong every year. Though the 2024 dates are yet to be announced, the 2023 races will be held from 10 to 12 November. TransLantau includes different course distances: 20km, 50km, 100km, and 100m. And as the name suggests, the race will cover Lantau Island. You’ll be able to explore the beautiful wilderness along Lantau’s scenic trails – but don’t forget to try to cross the finish line within the time limit!

5. Four Trails Mini (details to be announced for 2024)

Four Trails’ races for 2023 have just ended in April, so the dates for 2024 have yet to be set. 2023 had both physical and virtual races, so it’s yet to be seen if this format will continue for 2024. Course distances ranged from 13.5 to 16.4 kilometres and included the Hong Kong Trail, Maclehose Trail, Wilson Trail, and Lantau Trail. When completed within the set times, racers received souvenirs at the finish line (and burned a whole lot of calories!)

6. Spartan Race (details to be announced for 2024)

While details about the Spartan Race in 2024 have not been released, you probably have your calendars ready if you’re an adrenaline junkie. Though the 2023 race has not yet been run as of September, there were two options to choose from for the 2022 virtual Spartan Trail in Hong Kong: the 10K and the 21K. Like in 2021 and 2020, you might be able to join the Spartan Race virtually in 2024 – so keep your eyes peeled for the deets to come.

7. Oxfam Trailwalker (details to be announced for 2024)

For the Oxfam Trailwalker, you will be hiking along the MacLehose Trail starting from Sai Kung to Tuen Mun. Grab your team and challenge yourselves to finish the route within 48 hours. All participants have to be at least 18 years old and have raised the minimum sponsorship amount. Oxfam Trailwalker 2023 will take place from 24 to 26 November, so be sure to stay tuned afterwards for more details about arrangements in 2024.

8. Raleigh Challenge – Wilson Trail & Mountain Marathon (details to be announced for 2024)

Founded by HRH King Charles in 1984 and headquartered in the UK, Raleigh Hong Kong (RHK) is a local registered youth charity that inspires Hong Kong youth to explore their full potential through various fundraising events. In 2022, the Raleigh Challenge Wilson Trail was a hybrid – a physical race and a virtual race. Participants could use the app, Trailme, to record their results. In 2023, the Raleigh Challenge Mountain Marathon returns after 10 years, and will be run from 14 to 15 October as an orienteering competition. 9. RaceBase Asia (details to be announced for 2024)

A team of passionate and experienced trailrunners started RaceBase to bring together racers of all levels to explore Hong Kong’s many accessible and scenic trails. In 2023, The Lantau Beer Dash, The Great Relay, and the Boa Vista Burnout will take place in September and October. Stay tuned after these running races as RaceBase will be sure to hold some more exciting events in 2024.

10. Barclays Moontrekker (details to be announced for 2024)

Get ready to join Barclays Moontrekker’s race! The 2023 race is to be held from 13 to 14 October and will be happening in-person with 18km, 30km, and 40km trail races that will cross the beautiful summit of Lantau Peak. Join in for the 2023 race or wait for details for the 2024 race to be announced. What’s more, your leg day will be raising money for the Nature Conservancy, so let’s get moving!

11. Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Half Marathon (Hong Kong section) (details to be announced for 2024)

Lace up your sneakers, because the first ever Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Half Marathon (Hong Kong section) is taking place on 19 November 2023. This unique event is organised by Hong Kong China Association of Athletics Affiliates (HKAAA) in partnership with Bank of China. The 21km race will start and end at the Hong Kong Port, passing by Asia-World Expo and the Hong Kong International Airport.
As the first major sports event to take place on this bridge, the 8,000-person quota will welcome lucky runners from all over the world to experience this occasion. The race will also double as the first East-Asian Half Marathon Championships with elite runners invited to compete. As this half marathon is meant to become an annual event, stay tuned for more information about the 2024 edition.

12. Hong Kong Streetathon (details to be announced for 2024)

After a two-year hiatus, the Hong Kong Streetathon is making a 2023 comeback on 17 December. The event will feature a first-round harbour full marathon, cross-harbour half marathon, a 10km route, and a Youth 10km. With local and overseas participants joining the race, runners are encouraged to dress up for the Funniest Outfit Award (but make sure your costume doesn’t slow you down!). The 2023 Hong Kong Streetathon will hopefully mark its return as an annual event, so stay tuned for details about the 2024 race.
