Where to kayak in Hong Kong
1. Cheung Sha, Lantau Island
On the Southern coast of the popular Lantau Island is Cheung Sha, home to the longest beach (over 3.2km of powdery white sand) in Hong Kong. It’s from this beach, specifically Lower Cheung Sha Beach, where you can hop on a rented kayak and start exploring Lantau’s sublime shores. This is also a particularly great spot to ease kids or beginner adults into kayaking, as you can paddle around in shallower waters while staying close to the beach. You might even spot a couple of water buffaloes – talk about a memorable day on the beach!
Kayak rentals: In the Lower Cheung Sha Village in the beach area, Long Coast Seasports has single, two-seater, and three-seater kayak rentals. It also offers sea kayak tours and lessons.

2. Hong Kong Geopark, Sai Kung
As a member of the UNESCO global geopark network, it’s no surprise that Hong Kong Geopark in Sai Kung is one of the most gorgeous places to go kayaking. With stunning volcanic rock formations as well as dazzlingly clear blue waters, this beautiful oasis can be easily explored from aboard a kayak. Of the numerous islands in the geopark, the ideal ones to tackle for solo kayakers are Port Island and High Island. If you’re itching to paddle further out to Bluff Island or Sharp Island, you’re recommended to go with a group or a guide.
Kayak rentals: Head to Sha Ha Beach where you’ll find Ah Kwok Water Sports Centre, a small shop with single and two-seater kayaks for rent.

3. Hoi Ha, Sai Kung
Also located within Hong Kong Geopark, the quiet village of Hoi Ha – and specifically the Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park – deserves a shout-out. Located less than a half-hour bus ride from the Sai Kung town centre, the calm waters around Hoi Ha are beginner-friendly and full of diverse marine life. This protected area is also very clear, meaning you won’t have to paddle too far away from the shore for a dreamy view. Bonus: Hoi Ha is an excellent spot to go snorkelling, too!
Kayak rentals: Although the vendors here don’t have listed phone numbers or websites, rest assured there are more than enough local shops offering kayak rentals.

4. Kwun Yam Wan, Cheung Chau
For a peaceful kayaking experience in Cheung Chau, it’s best to eschew the more popular Tung Wan Beach and instead head over to the quieter Kwun Yam Beach. Although this isn’t much of a scenic spot to go kayaking in Hong Kong, the tranquil waters and fun-filled surrounding area makes it a great spot for kayaking practice and beginners.

5. Tai Mei Tuk & Plover Cove Reservoir, Tai Po
If you’re already taking a visit to Tai Po Market, why not hop on a bus and head to Tai Mei Tuk, too, which is just around 30 minutes away? Right by Tai Mei Tuk is the popular Plover Cove Reservoir, a truly picturesque spot to kayak in Hong Kong. As you paddle,you’ll be surrounded by green rolling hills. Being that Plover Cove is a local fave, you’ll find plenty of places to eat nearby, as well as other fun activities including bike riding.
