Making a statement, the punks of The Substation take over the space as part of the Discipline The City showcase
Singapore in its glossiness and high-tech everything, is actually the perfect breeding ground for underground culture. The punk subculture in Singapore has been a vibrant and active scene, and it’s more than just the music. The Substation has always been a beacon for the underground punk scene, so it’s no surprise that it will be a central part of the Discipline The City showcase which will feature a punk museum.

Formerly the hotspot and meeting point for punks in Singapore, new changes and rules have only highlighted the issue of shrinking spaces for punks to congregate. Discipline The City will run until November 26, and will cover issues related to the politics of space – mainly the spaces in The Substation itself. A “punk-in-residence” will then do whatever they want with the space, within legal boundaries of course, as a gesture to give it back to the punks.
As Singapore continues to develop, let’s hope that its underground culture will not continue to shrink as well, and underground communities – like the punk subculture – won’t have to be “observed” from museums and enclosed spaces.
