In this series, we showcase the best local musicians and bands in Singapore who are shaping the Singapore Sound. This week, we present the entrancing, new-age r&b of Ffion
Others may cower in despair when caught up in ill rumours, but not this burgeoning singer-songwriter. An inspiration in more ways than one, Ffion is the next featured musician in our Singapore Sound series.
If you stumbled upon our local musicians to watch out for round-up, you already know why Ffion gets our stamp of approval. The nascent songbird has been gradually erupting from the fringes of YouTube to attaining indie/r&b semi-stardom and street cred amongst discerning musos. Ballads with subtle electronic edges aside, Ffion stands out from the bunch of scene youngbloods with beguiling, nuance-peppered vocals reminiscent of prolific r&b sirens like Banks and Corinne Bailey Rae. And just as how her mesmeric voice latches on like a bulls-eye to the brain, Ffion’s lyrical material is just as unforgettable.
“You know your rumours ’bout me were wrong / But I heard one about you… And now you’re all alone / So f*ck you,” Ffion croons gracefully without flinching, despite the blatant fury in her words on her latest single, “Rumours”. The song represents Ffion’s desire to let go of a broken relationship with confidence; it is an empowering yet elegant song that’s buttressed by light pianos, rim hits, cruising trumpets and a muffled, gramophone-sque filter that keeps her voice in the foreground – courtesy of the tight production of GROSSE.
To catch this champ in the flesh, you’re invited to catch Ffion at the launch show of her debut EP titled Bad Habits, at The Substation on 23 June. And this here’s no rumour; Ffion is the r&b hotshot you need to catch right now.
