In this new series, we showcase the best local musicians and bands in Singapore who are shaping the Singapore Sound. This week, we present the rock & roll antics of The Pinholes
Without a doubt, there’s no band quite like The Beatles, and there probably never will be. But if you’re looking for a modern-day class act that will give them a run for their money, these local lads might just be it.
Up next on our Singapore Sound series is The Pinholes, reputed around the Southeast Asian region as Singapore’s own Fab Four. The Pinholes are a campy, nostalgic outfit who pay homage to the timeless era of ’60s rock & roll – think matching costumes, sunny dispositions complete with loose yet colourful harmonies, and catchy guitar licks that Chuck Berry would love. I mean, they even have the McCartney-approved haircuts to boot. Not to mention, any band that can get away with the ridiculous lyrics, “My life has been so wonderful and miracle” just wins in my books.
The Pinholes aren’t some gimmick-y flash in the pan either; in fact, 2017 marks the band’s 15th year anniversary, and they’ve commemorated the milestone in a fitting way. They’ve just released a new, old-sounding single that’s gloriously retro, and it’s called “Bintang Rok N Rollmu”, Malay for “Your Rock N Roll Star”. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, rest assured you’ll be bopping along to this merry earworm. I challenge you not to.
