The boutique luxury hotel in Singapore’s Central Business District is more than just a pretty face
If Honeycombers had a home, it’ll probably look like Sofitel So Singapore. It’s bold, romantic and suitably glamorous, with marble honeycomb tiling (that’s so us) in the lobby, restaurant and bathroom. And like our office at Telok Ayer, the stylish year-old hotel is housed within a restored heritage building. The traditional-meets-modern concept never seems to get old, huh?
Before 35 Robinson Road became this luxurious hotel, it was the home of Ogilvy, one of the largest marketing communications companies in the world. In fact, the ghost of the building’s creative past lingers within, thanks to the magic (and utterly chic) touches by Karl Lagerfeld and acclaimed interior designer Isabelle Miaja.
I rolled up to Sofitel So Singapore one weekend to have a taste of its marvelous suite. And needless to say, it was oh-so sweet. The 85 square-metre, high-ceilinged bedroom has a cosy, private balcony to watch the traffic go by, and its own opulent, open-plan bathroom, which comes with a huge tub to soak for hours and double sinks. No expenses were spared in decorating the swishy interiors, which shows a mix of Art Deco elements and hints of French Rococo style.

Good looks aside, Sofitel So Singapore’s hospitality deserves more than a mere mention. Inside our So Lofty suite, there’s a private bar with complimentary drinks and a Illy Espresso Machine for caffeine junkies; Apple gadgets to control all the techy bits in the room; plus his and hers toiletries that have everything include hair ties. Staff are delightfully-friendly and will go out of their way to make sure your needs are taken care of. Then, there’s the golden-tiled pool at rooftop bar Hi-So, which boast ace drink deals every weeknight.
If friends from out-of-town ask for hotel recommendations, Sofitel So Singapore certainly ranks high on my list. Rooms are luxurious, its amenities and services are nothing short of stellar, and – perhaps most importantly – great food and drink options are just steps away, with the iconic Lau Pa Sat just next door for serious local grub. Staying within the CBD, where it’s peaceful and quiet at night, does have its perks.
