Feeling artsy? SIFA is back with a line-up of indie films, theatre productions, interactive installations and more by by local and international artists
What if we told you you could (a) visit actual homes of residents around the island, (b) expand your circle of buddies by cooking with strangers, (c) be an extra in an actual Punjabi banquet film set, and (d) get handsy in an art workshop? Well, you can do it all at the Singapore International Festival of Arts 2017 (SIFA). Whether you’re at SIFA to soak up the novelty works of local and international artists, or participate in bizarrely rad activities, there’s something for everyone at the coolest arts fest in town.
In no relation to fairytales and pixiedust, this year’s theme revolves around Jane Bennett’s definition of ‘Enchantment’ via her book, The Enchantment of Modern Life. This beast of an arts fest is more than meets the eye, focusing on innovative works that hold deep desires for the finer things in life – regardless of whether one lives in luxe or simple conditions. Set across several venues islandwide, prepare to be mind-blown by ‘enchanting’ works such as breathtaking indie films and intimate open homes. Key figures participating include producer Jeffrey Tan, cartoonist Sonny Liew, theatre-maker Edith Podesta, choreographer Daniel Kok, and there’ll also be productions by Pangdemonium, Nine Years Theatre, K. Rajagopal and more.
But here’s our takeaway: You won’t truly understand the art until you’ve lived – or at least try – the art. And if these programmes strike a chord in you – excellent. Get the ball rolling by discussing and sharing your ‘woke’ experiences amongst your artsy squad and the new pals you made at the fest.
Singapore International Festival of Arts, from 28 June to 9 September 2017, across five venues. Tickets are available from 20 April at SISTIC, with Early Bird sales until 20 May.
