From hawker food and mod-Sin cuisine, to fine wines and open-air cinemas – there’s plenty to check out at the Singapore Food Festival this year
You can’t live in this country and not love food, ’cos let’s face it – it’s all around you! Hawker centres offering street food, trendy cafés in the neighbourhood dishing out cosmopolitan bites, fine dining restaurants serving exquisite eats; it’s not humanly possible to eat everything in Singapore despite our miniature size. Tying it all together in one massive islandwide event is the Singapore Food Festival 2017 – a celebration of our nation’s collective passion for food. Themed “Savour Singapore in Every Bite”, this festival celebrates our gluttonous desires with food trails, hawker spotlights, wine pairings, and loads more. And to get you started, here are five activities you’ll want to add to your list.
The Singapore Food Festival’s signature event, STREAT, will treat foodies to a spectacular mod-Sin and mod-Peranakan menu. Malcolm Lee of the Michelin-starred Candlenut will join forces with Chef Willin Low (a pioneer of mod-Sin cuisine) at a pop-up restaurant experience. The three-course meal ($50) will let diners sample a variety of three appetisers and three sharing mains before being served with individual portions of desserts.
The culinary duo will also work together to curate a selection of nine stalls run by young hawkerpreneurs and chefs who will present unique interpretations of popular local dishes. The stalls will be helmed by local favourites like New Ubin Seafood, Peranakan Khek, and Whampoa Prawn Noodle.
STREAT, Clifford Square, 80 Collyer Quay, Singapore 049326. 14-15 July, 5pm-10.30pm.
Hawker Spotlight 2017
The third edition of Hawker Spotlight celebrates Singapore’s distinctive hawker culture by featuring some of Singapore’s favourite hawker stalls. In partnership with City Gas and Canon Singapore, this year’s event will focus on Maxwell Food Centre (a food centre we absolutely adore). Singapore TV icon, Moses Lim, will hold a contest that will allow guests to win a chance to take a peek into the life of hawkers at Maxwell. And if you’re a happy snapper, the folks from Canon Singapore will also be offering helpful tips on food photography.
Hawker Spotlight 2017, Maxwell Food Centre, 1 Kadayanallur Street, Singapore S069184. 16 July, 3pm-4.30pm.
The 50 Cents Fest: Those Years
While Singapore’s hawker fare is certainly affordable, it’s been decades since Singaporeans have been able to buy a hawker meal for 50 cents. This year’s 50 Cents Fest takes on a “Those Years” theme that harkens back to hawker centres, entertainment, and prices from the ’80s. Expect dishes like Abacus Seeds, Cantonese paper-wrapped chicken, Hokkien rickshaw noodles, ah balling, and ice balls. The entirety of Smith Street will be decked out to theme and feature roving giveaways of old-school snacks and toys. Come dressed to the ’80s theme and you’ll also stand a chance to win attractive prizes.
The 50 Cents Fest: Those Years, Chinatown Food Street, Smith Street, Singapore S050335. 29 July, 1pm-11pm; 30 July, 11am-11pm.
Hawker Wine Safari
Ever wanted to try hawker food paired with fine wines? This juxtaposition of Singapore’s blue-collar cuisine and fine wines will feature dishes from Hong Heng Fried Sotong Prawn Mee, Alliance Seafood, and Tian Tian Chicken Rice paired with new-world wines from Australia and New Zealand. Tickets will go for $88++.

Open-Air Cinema at Social Market
The Singapore Food Festival goes beyond good food! Sprawl out on the lawn of Open Farm Community and enjoy a curated picnic basket ($35++, includes one screening ticket) featuring homemade paninis, freshly squeezed juice, and a fruit from the garden. Before the open-air screening, you’ll get to take part in yoga classes, urban farming workshops, and shop for local products at the Social Market. Open Farm Community’s Chef Russel Ong will also present a special Singapore Food Festival Menu to guests.
