We love entrepreneurs and small business owners at Honeycombers, which is why we’ve created Launchpad, a digital networking platform (with IRL benefits) that encourages connection, business support and community. It’s a privilege and pleasure to learn from so many talented folks! Looking for inspiration? Check out how Samantha Johnson, the founder of Hey Montgomery, gets it done like a boss.
Tell us the story behind your business.
Hey Montgomery was born from a labour of love, as I researched new and upcoming children’s furniture and decor designs during my maternity leave. My background was in luxury design; looking back on my younger years, I was a master of recreating and designing my bedroom as a child, thanks to my DIY-loving parents!
The company bloomed to life in 2020 after my son Montgomery (aka Monty) was born after a challenging IVF journey. I wanted more freedom and flexibility while still working on my true love – design. So I delved deep into what my niche could be – and tada, the company was born.
What are some milestones or achievements you’re most proud of?
I launched the company during the heart of Covid, which was probably not the best time to connect and visit clients with all the restrictions in place. However, the business is three now, and I’m proud of where it is today, and how people think or recommend our company when looking to design children’s spaces. I work with a team and a close network of people – it makes running the company more fun and enjoyable!
Share with us a setback that taught you a valuable lesson about running a business.
In the design industry, it’s always hard to build solid connections and reliable contractual sources. Over the years, I’ve interacted with various contractors, some terrible and frustrating, which can create a challenging working environment for myself and my clients. Thankfully, I’ve learnt how to sieve through and not waste time on particular people. I’ve managed to connect with reliable sources and build a little bubble which is extremely valuable.
Describe a typical day in your life and what you love most about it.
At 6am, I’m up and ready to roll. I’m a morning person! I prepare Monty for school and say bye to him and my husband by 7.30am. Work starts from 8am in my office and I’m pretty much there until 4.30pm designing and planning – unless there are site visits or installations.
My biggest joy is being there for my son and having that flexibility to be 100% focused on him when he comes home from school so we can play and enjoy the evening. I’m very fortunate to be able to combine my work life with my family life when needed.
What’s your favourite book, movie, or TV show that has influenced your entrepreneurial mindset?
I have been forever obsessed with every design show since I was young. Growing up, I watched Changing Rooms, Grand Designs and Location Location – all well-known shows in the UK. Funnily enough, my parent’s home was featured on Location Location in my teens and I was wowed by meeting Phil Spencer, the presenter. These TV shows, along with my studies and love for all things creative, led me to where I am today.
Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Just go for it. It’s a tough ride but the flexibility and rewards you receive will offset any doubts or troubles you encounter.
Top tip for maintaining a good work-life balance?
Ensure you have strict timings for when you focus on work and when you spend time on yourself and your family. Communicate with colleagues and clients from the beginning to ensure they understand how you work. It’s all about finding that near-perfect balance.
Favourite thing to do on weekends?
Family time – exploring or travelling! I’m a Katong kid, having lived in the area for 14 years. We mainly hang out around the area, explore new cafes and shops or have a quick cycle to East Coast Park.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself that not many people know.
I love cars and driving! I find driving therapeutic and it gives me time to switch off and think. It also provides the opportunity to go off the beaten track spontaneously and check out those pretty streets and houses.
