After much anticipation, we’re just a few weeks away from the movie’s premiere. Besides sorting through our wardrobes for something pink, we’re planning on binge-watching a bunch of films to get in the mood. Here’s our list if you need some recommendations.
Movies that’ll get you hyped for the Barbie movie
1. Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus
There’s nothing like starting this marathon off than with a classic Barbie movie. Follow along with Barbie as she takes on the role of Princess Annika who craves adventure. Unfortunately for her, she runs into trouble after an encounter with an evil wizard named Wenlock. On her quest to save her family and her kingdom, she goes through enchanted forests, skates through icy caverns, and discovers new allies along the way. For anyone that’s grown up with Barbie movies, this’ll hit you with plenty of nostalgia.
2. Lady Bird
This coming-of-age comedy-drama tells the story of high school senior Christine McPherson aka Lady Bird. The movie depicts Christine’s strained relationship with her mother and her ambitions to attend a prestigious college. The film depicts the struggles of adolescence while combining wisdom with humour. Lady Bird also serves as Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut. Get to know her style as she tells a story where nothing and everything happens at once.
3. Legally Blonde
To all the girls that have been underestimated, this one’s for you. Elle Woods is a bubbly blonde who wants nothing more than to marry her boyfriend Warner Huntington III. Unfortunately, Warner chooses to break up with her instead, believing that Elle isn’t a suitable partner as he aspires to be a senator. Cue Elle pulling an absolute girl boss move by studying for months to get into Harvard Law School to prove her worth. Prepping for the Barbie movie is the perfect excuse to re-watch this romantic comedy. Plus with Elle perfectly decked out in pink, she’s absolutely on theme.
4. Enchanted
We have a couple of guesses as to what the overarching storyline looks like. By the looks of the trailer, we’re thinking it’ll be a situation where Barbie gets pulled out of her fantasy world and into a harsh reality. In the same flavour, we’re putting Enchanted on our binge list. Giselle is a princess hailing from the fairytale land of Andalasia. And just like every princess ever, there’s an evil stepmother involved. Now thrust into New York City, Giselle begins to learn what the real world really looks like.
5. The Truman Show
Rumour has it that The Truman Show was on Margot Robbie’s list when she was prepping for the Barbie movie. We can’t confirm or deny the claims, but we think this movie is definitely worth a watch. Truman Burbank is an ordinary man living in the town of Seahaven Island. Spoiler alert: unbeknownst to him, his whole life is actually a reality TV program! As the show’s 30th anniversary approaches, Truman’s world begins to crumble around him. With the discovery of a radio channel describing his movements and a spotlight falling out of the sky, Truman begins to question his whole life. Thus begins a quest to discover the truth and possibly escape.
6. Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey
Birds of Prey is arguably one of the must-watch Margot Robbie films. She comes in with bombastic confidence and a pitch-perfect performance of Harley Quinn. This wild ride of a movie begins with Harley recovering from her breakup with Joker. Thanks to a very public announcement that she’s no longer under his protection, she’s got a target on her back. She now faces the wrath of every criminal that’s held a grudge against her, including the crime boss Black Mask. Joining forces with three deadly women, they go on a mission to save the superheroine, Cassandra Cain.
7. Little Women
This coming-of-age novel has been retold time and time again. Think film adaptations, television musicals, and even a K-drama! Greta Gerwig’s direction of Little Women is a film that you have to catch. You go through the lives of the March sisters living in 19th-century Massachusetts. Years after the Civil War, the sisters separate and seek to find places for themselves in the world. The film depicts constraints enforced upon women and what it takes to overcome them.
8. Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper
Who remembers collecting the Princess and the Pauper Barbies when they were kids? Despite being the only film without magical elements, this flick is regarded as the best of the Barbie franchise. Based on the book by Mark Twain, this story tells a classic tale of a royal and a peasant developing an unlikely friendship. After Princess Anneliese is kidnapped by the scheming advisor Preminger, the pauper Erika takes her place as the princess’s young tutor and begins an investigation. Cue sweet messages of loving people as they are and the power of friendship.
9. Clueless
We’ll take any excuse if it means we get to rewatch Clueless for the nth time. The plot centers around the beautiful Cher Horowitz. After befriending the newest kid on the block, she goes on to transform her with a makeover. There are also the misadventures of her playing matchmaker to her teachers and questioning her own existence. If there’s one thing we vibe with for this film, it’s the fashion. Cher Horowitz is an absolute fashionista in deliciously iconic outfits. And we expect no less from the upcoming Barbie movie.
Now you’re all ready to catch the Barbie movie come July 2023!
