Feel the heat? The limited edition laksa barramundi from Guzman y Gomez might be why. Keep scrolling for our review of this bold, new flavour!
As adventurous foodies who love trying wacky new creations, we’ll let you in on a secret: July and August are the best months in Singapore to surprise your palate. In celebration of the nation’s birthday each year, F&B brands always come through with interesting, local-inspired flavours. We’ve recently savoured the likes of nasi lemak popcorn, satay sauce flavoured chocolate, and now, laksa barramundi Mexican creations from Guzman y Gomez.
Available from now till 24 August 2025, the laksa barramundi pays homage to our little red dot’s 60th and is a part of the ‘GYG Goes Local’ initiative that’s all about spotlighting local food heritage and flavours. This bold and spicy flavour is available for a limited time only, so here’s our verdict on whether it’s worth a try!
Tacos, burritos and fries… We tried them all
At Honeycombers, we take our taste tests seriously. Of course, we had to try the laksa barramundi flavour in different variations. Five, to be exact – the burrito, bowl, nacho fries, as well as soft and hard tacos. Whether you’re a fan of tacos, quesadillas or giant burritos, you can enjoy this laksa filling in all Guzman y Gomez’s classic styles at an additional $1 top-up.

A hearty, jam-packed burrito is my go-to, so I gravitated towards that immediately. Each burrito comes packed with the usual fluffy rice, black beans and salsa, as well as the laksa barramundi. Every bite was a satisfying burst of flavours, and I was pleasantly surprised by how the laksa barramundi wasn’t upstaged by other ingredients.
The aromatic blend of spices will be the first to hit you, followed by subtle coconut notes. This is all thanks to the creamy housemade laksa sauce – a delectable blend of dried shrimp, candlenut, laksa leaves and fragrant spices, alongside premium cold-pressed White Sutera coconut milk from The Coconut Club for additional richness and velvety texture. The pan-seared fish was also soft and tender, sans any fishy notes, which is a major plus-point.
Similar to other GYG fillings, the laksa barramundi comes in two spice levels: mild and spicy. As someone with pretty decent spice tolerance – my mala order stands at a comfortable medium level – I expected the spicy version to pack a stronger punch. If you prefer your spice at a tongue-tingling degree, this might fall short for you.

Another standout variation I enjoyed was the nacho fries. Packed to the brim with thick-cut potato fries, melted Jack cheese, sour cream, salsa and a generous scoop of guacamole, it’s the perfect side for sharing or snacking. I liked how the laksa barramundi added extra richness and fragrance, and put an interesting twist on this dish that’s usually overpowered by cheese.
