1. Tender chorizo pork belly with orange vanilla butter glaze ($128)
Now, we don’t make the rules, but succulent meats are a must at any festive dinner table. This dish from Cedele’s Christmas menu was set to impress from the get-go. Just imagine a glistening chunk of smoked pork belly stuffed with chorizo and glazed in sweet orange vanilla butter.
I found myself easily slicing through the succulent meat which is always a win in my books. Every bite of the juicy, tender meat was well-seasoned and complemented the sweetness of the glaze. Coupled with the chorizo stuffing, this was a bold and flavourful dish with the right kick of spice.
Rating: 9/10. A bold and hearty medley of flavours that meat lovers will adore.
2. Lobster and crab quiche ($79)
Classics never go out of style so we had to give Cedele’s timeless favourite a try. Meet the lobster and crab quiche. This savoury quiche boasts a creamy egg custard filling with lobster and crab meat, red peppers, spring onions and cheese.
Expect eggy goodness in every bite, with generous chunks of lobster and crab meat. The robust flavours of the peppers and onions are pretty prominent, so this dish might not be for everyone. Be sure to heat this up so you get that crispy crust.
Rating: 7/10. A classic with its charms, but may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
3. Spinach brioche Christmas tree ($43)
Ask me to rank my favourite carbohydrates and bread often comes up top. It’s no surprise that this dish turned out to be one of my favourites – and for all the right reasons. First up, aesthetics. Buttery brioche rolls shaped into an elegant Christmas tree and decked out with fresh herbs and berries… What’s not to love?
I paired these fluffy rolls with the onion marmalade and oh-so-indulgent spinach cream cheese, and downed four pieces in a row before I knew it. Alternatively, you can pair this staple with roasted veggies or meats, but I’d recommend enjoying them as they are.
Rating: 9/10. I may be biased as a bread lover… but I need this at my Christmas dinner table, stat.
4. Black Forest cabin log cake ($88)
Think first impressions don’t matter? This whimsical sweet treat will make you think twice. Just take a look at the adorable roofs created with homemade ladyfingers, charming cookies shaped like stars and angels, and adorable baubles dotting the house. Ah, it reminds us of a cosy snowed-in Christmas that tropical climate folks (like us) can only dream of.
In classic Black Forest style, the chocolate sponge comes layered with cream, rich 70% dark chocolate mousse and tangy black cherry jam. While undeniably Instagram-worthy, the cake was a tad too dry for my liking and I wished the chocolate flavours were richer.
Rating: 6.5. It’s a definite A+ for presentation, but not my top pick for a decadent dessert.
5. Fresh berries tart ($88)
Here’s another gorgeous centrepiece to have at your home gathering. The fresh berries tart is a visual spectacle topped with cloud-like Italian meringue and a vibrant medley of berries. Think blueberries, gooseberries, raspberries and strawberries. Sink your teeth in the tart and you’ll find a rich chocolate mousse, a pistachio sponge and homemade berry compote.
While I was expecting the pistachio flavour to take centrestage, it turned out to be on the milder side. On the other hand, the chocolate mousse had a more pronounced taste. Paired with the tangy berry compote and an array of fresh fruits, every bite was a delicate balance of flavours. Oh, and extra points for the crumbly, cocoa-dusted crust!
Rating: 8/10. Aesthetically-pleasing? Check. Delish dessert that almost tastes guilt-free? Double check.
6. Assorted Christmas cookies ($38)
What’s synonymous with the holidays? Christmas cookies, of course! Ending the feast with handmade bakes was the cherry on top. Baked with top-quality European butter, these assorted cookies came in five delectable flavours. And spoiler alert, we couldn’t pick a fave.
Our top picks go to the French Rose (a buttery base with hints of floral notes) and the Mocha Swirl (for a strong dose of espresso). Both cookies had the same melt-in-the-mouth texture and the perfect level of crumbliness. If we had to pick our least favourite, it’d be the Matcha Chocolate Marble as the chocolate flavour unfortunately overpowered any hint of matcha. Other flavours include the Coco Cloud and Raspberry Thumbprint.
Rating: 8.5/10. You can’t go wrong with handmade butter cookies. Snag them for a fuss-free holiday gift for your loved ones!
