Lovers of cakes in Singapore, you’re in for a treat! Never apologise for being a follower, especially if you’re lining up for the latest Singapore food craze. Japanese cheese tarts, make way for a fresher, lighter and heartier Japanese baked good known as castella cakes. We’ve rounded up a short guide on bakeries and patissiers to get your paws on ‘em, but we must give you a heads up: it may take major queuing time. They’re worth it though, we promise!
Le Castella
Originating from Taiwan, these cakes were the first to kick off the castella cake trend in Singapore. It created an obsession amongst cake fans with queues lasting four hours in the first week of its opening, and there’s been no slowing down since. This eggy, fluffy rendition comes in original and cheese flavours.

Ah Mah Homemade Cake
This bakery is also no stranger to Malaysians, expanding to 14 outlets within just three months. Made with high-quality milk and no added butter or preservatives, these Taiwanese-inspired cakes are a guilt-free dessert you can binge on. And with outlets now in Bukit Panjang Plaza and Vivocity, those living in the West now have a castella go-to!

Antoinette
Launching their own castella collection, Antoinette has unveiled a myriad of mouth-watering flavours like vanilla, earl grey, and Nutella. Their ondeh ondeh flavour is also a must-try for a unique, local twist. Lifted entirely by meringue, expect their cakes to be tantalising and moist.

BreadTalk
Called the Pong Pong Cake, it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind version of the castella, stuffed with salted egg yolk filling – an amazing combination of two popular food phenomena. Each slab is light, fluffy and savoury -how can you say no? For now, it can be found at BreadTalk’s sister outlet, The Icing Room (Jurong Point and Nex), up ‘til August.
