It’s not just you. Making breakfast a daily habit is a challenge for many. Are these realistic breakfast ideas the solution?
We’ve often heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but how many of us actually bother to make it a habit? Well, not me. Friends joke that I’m on a liquid diet most mornings – a glass smoothie or fruit juice and I’m out the door. Not the worst track record. But, it could be better.
In this week-long challenge, I tried to get into the habit of making breakfast every day, in a bid to start a healthier morning routine. For realistic breakfast ideas, I’m using convenient groceries that are readily accessible at FairPrice.
Monday: Smoothie and energy bar
Back to work! Can’t say I’m a Monday person but a healthy breakfast did help to power me through a morning of meetings. I’m glad that it was a work-from-home day – skipping the early commute meant a little more shut-eye. I wasn’t quite energised enough to put together a proper meal (oops), so I decided to start this challenge easy.
I made a smoothie and grabbed an energy bar before plopping myself at my desk. The salted caramel peanut butter bar from Mavyer’s was more than enough to keep me going for the morning. If you haven’t tried Mavyer’s health bars before, it doesn’t taste like your typical granola bar or cereal bar. It’s more like a soft cookie with a somewhat powdery texture. In terms of flavour, this bar had a delicious mix of sweet and salty with notes of peanut butter.
Tuesday: Greek yoghurt with oats
I managed to wake up a teeny bit earlier so I would have time for breakfast before heading to the office. Today’s fuel? Chobani’s lemon Greek yoghurt, with a generous topping of Carman’s cluster oats in berry crunch. I’ve been fond of Greek yoghurt for its rich, creamy flavour, and this zesty flavour from Chobani didn’t disappoint. That and the sprinkling of oats kept me energised and productive till lunchtime – no mean feat as I usually get hungry before noon.
Wednesday: Fruity bites
Happy midweek! I rolled out of bed for another work-from-home day. I wasn’t feeling too hungry so I settled for fruits. I washed up some seedless grapes and grape tomatoes for a quick treat. Psst: these grapes and tomatoes are only in season for limited periods of the year, and they’re now available at FairPrice’s Australia Fair (more on this below)! Shop the Autumn Crisp green seedless grapes, Adora black seedless grapes, Sweet Delight grape tomatoes and Sun Delight grape tomatoes for an easy breakfast idea.
Thursday: Quick and easy health bars
It was the final office day of the week, and my schedule was packed with meetings. I was doing pretty well with the challenge the past few days, so I thought I could get up much earlier than the previous days to make a hearty meal. But alas, I only had a few minutes to spare as the snooze button proved too tempting to resist. Thankfully, I still had health bars from Mavyers that were perfect for a grab-and-go breakfast. I had two of these (in flavours of choco chip crunchy peanut butter and salted caramel peanut butter) as I made my way to the office.
I wished the choco chip crunchy peanut butter bar delivered on the crunch, but it had the same soft texture of the first bar I tried, just with the addition of peanut bits in it. They’re also pretty small, so I recommend having two or pairing a bar with something else. That said, for a bite that’s free of added sugars, I’d say the flavours were good, with a dash of sweetness from dates and the nutty aroma of peanut butter.
Friday: PB sandwich and a banana
It was Fri-yay which meant a half-day at work. Getting out of bed in good spirits, I munched on bread with Mavyer’s aromatic salted caramel peanut butter and a banana for breakfast before work began. Maybe it was my brain being conscious of this challenge, but I’ve started to realise that I’ve been naturally waking up a tad earlier on most mornings this week.
I love having time to myself before the day begins – even if it just means a few extra minutes to scroll on social media. This might be a sign to adjust my bedtime and waking up schedule…
Saturday: Greek yoghurt with granola
Yay to the weekend! After a busy week, I was stoked to unwind and meet up with friends. But first, breakfast. I was in the mood for yoghurt so I grabbed the Chobani blueberry Greek yoghurt and tossed some granola on it. Today’s granola of choice was Carmen’s 5-grain and seed granola with apple and blueberry, which perfectly matched the blueberry-flavoured yoghurt.
Sunday: Open-faced toast with scrambled eggs
A leisurely breakfast (or rather, brunch) after sleeping in? It was a yes from me. I had my favourite scrambled eggs, alongside toast with generous lashings of the delectable 5 seeds peanut butter from Mavyer’s, topped with slices of banana. I loved this peanut butter – it was deliciously nutty, with the likes of sesame seeds and sunflower seeds adding to its texture. It was just the fuel I needed for a leisurely day of errands and me-time.
