Best hotels in Melbourne: New and popular stays
1. The Standard X Melbourne

The StandardX has landed, bringing its signature eclectic style to Fitzroy’s creative heart. The first of its kind, this new offshoot fuses the grittiness of Melbourne’s post-punk past with cooler-than-cool design and effortless style. Purposed for urban explorers who don’t want any part of the ordinary, this 125-room hotel is a courageous blend of industrial edge and modern comfort.
Think interior stables like crisp white plush beds, open wardrobes, and a writing ledge for late-night musings. The lobby area showcases oodles of mainly local design talent that somehow feels functionally elevated yet downright cool. I defy anyone not to languish in the Big Talk Chair designed by Adam Goodrum or stare listlessly at the Flame Light near the Reception nook.

The nosh on offer is equally electric thanks to all-day Thai restaurant Bang, which effortlessly delivers a riot of street-food flavours reimagined with local Victorian produce. My favourite spot, the Roof, (guests-only top floor retreat, thank you very much), is the grooviest place in town to watch the sunset, serving up light bites and local brews.
Tip: if you stay for the weekend, don’t miss out on a meander through the arty Fitzroy Mill Markets held every Saturday. You’re sure to discover local art and unique fashion pieces found nowhere else.
Rates: from $207/night
Address: The Standard X, 62 Rose Street, Fitzroy, 3065

With 316 contemporary rooms, thoughtful extras like valet parking, self check-in, a 24-hour fitness centre, sauna, steam room, and a heated indoor pool, you’ll be in comfort heaven.
While the art nods around every corner just elevates the experience (we see you, Diva Garden). Cocktail lovers will appreciate the modern Aussie flavours at Jin Bar, and Port Bistro lays out a buffet breakfast worth leaving the cradle of comfort for.

Think plush king beds draped in Frette linens, Leif and Aesop amenities, and thoughtful touches like complimentary in-room treats.
Dark woods, moody tones, and smart leather features make the vibe homely yet elevated, a dream for both short stays and longer jaunts. Location? Unbeatable. You’re tucked just off Exhibition Street. That means Flinders Lane’s dining heavyweights, Federation Square’s cultural hub, and the theatre district are mere steps away. Tip: need a morning caffeine fix? Stroll around the corner for a flat white and flaky pastry from Lune Croissanterie.
