An introduction to Bao

Founded by Shing Tat Chung, Erchen Chang, and Wai Ting Chung, Bao started as a humble street food stall at East London’s Netil Market. Now, the brand boasts several locations across the city, including Soho, Borough, and King’s Cross. Beyond the deliciously affordable food, collaborations with brands such as Carhartt, WIP, and Dover Street Market proved Bao had more personality than just fluffy buns.
Unlike fast food in the West, convenience in the East is defined by care, thinking ahead, and service. Think about the joy of visiting a Lawson or Family Mart in Japan! With the creation of Bao Fast Foods, the group is on a mission to take Taiwanese culture worldwide in an accessible, quick-service format.
The BFF experience

The Bao Fast Foods pop-up at New Bahru comes with two concepts: the fast food joint and the convenience store.
At its core, the pop-up has a dedicated focus on food. Specifically, Taiwanese comfort food reworked with Bao’s signature meticulous detail and playful attitude. Psst: read on for more details (including prices) of the menu.
Surrounding it is the classic Asian convenience store facade. Reminiscent of bodegas with a touch of that local mama shop vibe, BFF’s shelves will be stocked with goodies like Taiwanese snacks and even Bao’s own branded merchandise and collaborations. There’ll also be grab-and-go sections and self-serve stations.
What to expect on the menu

On to the meat and potatoes (or rice, if you will) of the pop-up: the food.
The must-try is the chicken chopper ($6.50), BFF’s take on Taiwanese fried chicken – more than 140 versions in the making. Yes, the team takes their fried chicken game very seriously here. The brand has spent their time mastering the craft of creating the perfect crust and its seasoning powders, like how they do on Taiwanese streets.
For heartier dishes, opt for the rice box ($7.95) or have it with dan dan noodles ($6.50), or even beef cup noodles ($12.50). And to wash it all down, get one of the Taiwanese craft teas developed with Taiwan-based S.C Labs, in nitro or carbonated options.
Here’s a list of everything the brand has to offer so far:
- Chicken Chopper, available in Original Crispy, Flame Glazed, and Master Scalded flavours ($6.50)
- Rice box ($7.95)
- Dan dan noodles ($6.50)
- Beef cup noodles ($12.50)
- Fluffy Natural Alishan Wintermelon ($5.95)
- Orange Guava Beauty Tea ($6.50)
- The Original Peanut Oatside M*lk ($6)
