BlackSalt in Sai Ying Pun

Hidden in the backstreets of Sai Ying Pun, BlackSalt is a family-run boutique restaurant founded by Taran Chadha. Chada is a Hong Kong-born chef with Indian ancestry, and focuses on serving delicious fusion dishes inspired by cuisine from the West Indies, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. BlackSalt gives off an incredibly humble yet friendly ambience that is charming and regularly draws return visitors. The restaurant’s quiet and secluded location makes you forget that you’re even in the concrete jungle of Hong Kong.
What we loved

Start off with some BS Okra fries, which are perfectly seasoned with blacksalt, mint and tandoori red onions. The fries are vegetarian, gluten free and also are easy to eat and share. Smother them in some chilli kewpie mayo for some extra creamy goodness. Warning – these fries are highly addictive and we couldn’t stop ourselves from going back for more.

We definitely recommend ordering What’s The Mattar Paneer?, which is pan-seared homemade curd topped with green pea gravy swimming in grape tomatoes and basil. It is incredibly light, fresh, savoury and tangy all at once making it an excellent appetiser. Konkan Coast Fish Cakes are also a must-order. The hand-chopped barramundi fish cakes marinated in octopus coconut curry are sweet, spicy, rich and pack a punch of flavour.

Made from fresh coconut, avocado and asafoetida, the wholesome and filling Keralan Beetroot Chops are completely vegetarian and have a truly unique taste. For dessert, enjoy the Maldivian Banana Fritters scented with rose essence. The fritters are perfectly crisp on the outside and covered in warm orange caramel and fluffy whipped cream. The textures made for a delightful evening treat that would put a smile on the face of anyone who has a sweet tooth.
Would we go back?

Absolutely. Whether you’re a vegetarian, have a gluten-free diet or are a lover of everything, BlackSalt offers a wide range of dishes that will fit your dietary needs. It is a great place to catch up with friends and enjoy some after work drinks and snacks.
For those who need to plan a romantic or unique date, the small intimate boutique restaurant has candles and fairy lights that create a very special, warm and memorable experience. BlackSalt offers brunch on weekends and serves dinner from Monday-Sunday except on Tuesdays. Just make sure you make a reservation because they all always packed, and for good reason!
