I temporarily ditched my fave food for Asian-inspired meals from Yummy Bros. Keep reading for my honest opinion on them.
Ask me to choose between going to the gym five times a week and maintaining a consistent diet, and I’ll pick the former every time. I’m a huge foodie. Saying no to wok hei-laden hokkien mee, spicy mala hotpot and sweet treats is close to impossible. But recently, a potential game-changer for nutritious yet tasty food has landed on my radar. Enter meal prep services from Yummy Bros.
And nope, it’s not all chicken breast and sweet potatoes. This meal prep service offers healthier recipes inspired by well-loved Asian delicacies. After a quick scroll on its website, I was surprised by the extensive options including hawker faves like chicken rice and egg prata with chicken curry. I decided to order seven dishes from Yummy Bros and see how they stack up in taste. Ready to tuck in?
I rated seven healthy meals from Yummy Bros
1. Yummy Chicken Rice
Call me basic but chicken rice is one of my fave local dishes. Fragrant rice steeped in chicken fat, succulent meat and tangy chilli, what’s there not to love? This also meant that the version from Yummy Bros had big shoes to fill. Steamed with an in-house chicken rice broth, the low-GI brown rice surprisingly packed a lot of flavour.
The baked chicken breast was similarly well-seasoned, but unfortunately fell on the dryer side. I paired it with the low-calorie chilli sauce which turned out to be the star of the meal. Tangy and spicy, it could easily rival that of a standard chicken rice store. The stir-fried kailan was a nice addition of fibre to the meal, too. It was juicy, crunchy and generously doused in garlic, oyster sauce and light soy sauce. I wouldn’t have guessed that it was reduced in sodium!
Rating: 7.5/10. Definitely a healthier choice to curb your chicken rice cravings, but would love it if the chicken breast could be a tad juicer.
2. Yummy Chicken Panggang
There’s no way this famous Indonesian dish can taste healthy and delicious at the same time. At least, that’s what I thought. Spoiler alert: the chicken panggang easily became my top favourite. It’s a healthier spin-off, but equally satisfying and indulgent. The grilled chicken thigh meat was tender, smoky and came without skin and bones – which means it’s all juicy, succulent meat. Chock full of garlic, the in-house kecap manis marinade boasts the perfect blend of sweet and savoury. You’ll be surprised that there’s no fatty coconut oil in the sauce.
In an attempt to reduce my carb intake, I opted for the stir-fried egg cauliflower rice. Not only was it deliciously seasoned, it also came with pieces of fried eggs – and extra protein is always welcomed. For the sides, I went for the shiitake mushrooms that were juicy and loaded with garlic, as well as the delicious and crunchy Chinese cabbage.
Rating: 9/10. This dish knocked it out of the park. It’ll feel like you’ve ordered from an Indonesian food store, sans the usual calories, oil and fat.
3. Yummy Chicken Bulgogi
Bold and complex in flavour, Korean cuisine is my go-to pick for a hearty meal. And sweet and savoury chicken bulgogi always hits the spot. Yummy Bros’ version offered minced meat made from lean chicken breast. Instead of grilling the meat with lots of oil, it is stir-fried with zero-calorie olive oil spray for a guilt-free alternative. While the meat portion was generous, I found the black pepper seasoning slightly overpowering and the meat fairly dry. Plus, this dish seemed more similar to Thai basil chicken, rather than Korean chicken bulgogi.
As this was a customisable meal, I chose the Japanese short grain rice, along with Chinese cabbage and garlic eggplant. The sides turned out to be my favourite part of the meal. Both veggies retained their crunchy textures and juiciness, and were well-seasoned with a slight spice. As a spice lover, they have my stamps of approval.
Rating: 6.5/10. It didn’t meet my expectations of a Korean-style chicken bulgogi, but the sides came through.
4. Yummy Sambal Fish
If you need a dollop of chilli in literally every meal, this sambal fish is sure to hit the spot. The thick chunks of dory fish are slathered with an in-house sambal paste made from scratch. It’s a fiery yet addictive medley of chilli padi, red chilli, garlic, shallots and dried shrimp. And the fish itself? Oh-so-soft and tender, without bordering on mushy.
I went for the sesame garlic pasta for my carbs. It was a win, considering how every piece of penne was evenly coated in a fragrant sauce. For my dose of fibre, I had baby corn and sambal long beans which retained their crunch without being dry. Among all the sides I’ve tried, the long beans emerged as the standout, thanks to its aromatic and bold flavour.
Rating: 9/10. Right up the alley of a spice lover. I would gladly stick to a meal prep diet if all my meals can live up to this.
5. Yummy Mongolian Beef
Did you know Mongolian beef doesn’t originate from Mongolia? Fun fact: it’s actually a dish from Taiwan, and I was beyond curious to try this well-loved staple in Chinese-American restaurants. The lean flank steak slices are stir-fried with fresh garlic, ginger, sesame oil, dried chilli and soy sauce. Trust me when I say you can smell the fragrance even while it’s heating up in the microwave oven!
While I was expecting a stronger wok hei taste and flavouring, the seasoning and spice level turned out to be quite mellow. Texture wise, it wasn’t too chewy or stringy and had a tender bite. I completed the meal with the brown and red rice mix, along with the standard choice of broccoli and carrots. Flavourful and well-cooked, there wasn’t anything to nitpick about the sides.
Rating: 7/10. Slightly more flavouring for the beef, please.
6. Yummy Protein Beef Burger
Watching your calorie intake while still being able to have burgers? Now, this was a meal plan I could get behind. This protein-packed (33.5g per 240g burger!) angus beef cheeseburger comes in a set of two. A thick slab of Aberdeen angus beef patty sits between two wholemeal buns, topped with a homemade sauce, featuring American mustard, ketchup, minced pickles and finely diced sauteed yellow onions.
The bun was lightly toasted with a healthier alternative of cream cheese that mimics the creaminess of butter. While I loved the chunkiness of the patty, I wish it packed a stronger punch. Thankfully, the in-house sauce helped to add some flavour and elevate the burger. Another gripe? These burgers are classic style, which means they don’t come with any greens.
Rating: 7/10. Great for days when the cheeseburger craving hits, but would recommend throwing in tomato slices and shredded lettuce for added fibre.
7. Yummy Egg Prata Set
I’ll be honest: egg prata set with chicken curry is the last dish I would expect from a meal prep service. Healthy and prata just don’t seem like two words that’ll go together. But on first impression, this dish certainly looked the part: a thick slice of egg prata, generous chunks of chicken breast and 70g of curry sauce.
To make this dish healthier, the folks from Yummy Bros used wholegrain flour, replaced butter with cream cheese, and seared the prata with canola oil instead of frying with ghee. I could definitely taste the difference without the usual oiliness and heaviness of the prata. Although on the tougher end, the chicken breast paired divinely with the spicy curry. As a curry fan, I’ll shamelessly say that I finished every last drop of it.
Rating: 8/10. A more than decent healthier alternative that doesn’t make me miss my regular egg prata (too much).
Final thoughts: Did Yummy Bros nail it?
Healthy Asian-inspired dishes that taste almost as good as the real deal? It was well worth ditching my regular diet for these healthier eats from Yummy Bros. While some dishes were slightly underwhelming, I was overall impressed by the presentation and taste. The chicken panggang and sambal fish are definitely among my top favourites!
