Things to do for V-Day when unspoken for
Valentine’s Day? Pfft. Maybe not what St Val had in mind but, if you think this Hallmark-inspired day is as cheesy as we do, here are 8 non-romantic things to do this Valentine’s!
Hit the clubs
Everything always seems better after a drink or two, or until you lose count. Grab your girlfriends, don your best party frocks, and hit the clubs for a night of booze, beats, and things you won’t remember the next day. Deck out in your sexiest red outfit for Ku De Ta’s Expose: Red Edition (9pm, $38), head to uber-posh Pangaea ‘cause ladies get free entry and a glass of champagne before 1am, or work your moves to nu disco, deep house, and indie dance at Kyo.
Brunch date with the BFF
Intercontinental Singapore is giving away brunch for two at its amazing The Art of Sundays Champagne Brunch – what perfect timing for you to grab your bestie for a chill-out weekend brunch, to celebrate the love of friendship. Complete the day of indulgence with a massage, trip to a spa, and a buddy mani-pedi!
Feel good by doing good
OK we stole this from our 52 things to do in 2014 (scroll to #33), and what better time than during Valentine’s because love (of the humanitarian variety) is way more than just romance! This Valentine’s Day coincides with the Chinese Valentine’s Day (last day of Lunar New Year aka Yuan Xiao Festival), so Community Chest is holding an online campaign to celebrate this rare day of ‘double happiness’. Bring joy to the less fortunate by making a donation in a loved one’s name; and Community Chest will surprise him/her with an e-card containing your message. Best part? The Singapore Government will match donations dollar for dollar. Now that’s love.
Blue Valentine (L) 500 Days of Summer (R)
Go on an Anti-Valentine’s movie marathon
Who needs sappy love stories and annoying rom-coms, our votes are on classic anti-valentine movies like The War of the Roses, Fatal Attraction, To Die For, and quirky flicks (which at least register high on the hunk-o-meter) like Blue Valentine, Cruel Intentions, and 500 Days of Summer. So, grab a pack of popcorn, sit back, and thoroughly relish the demise of other people’s relationships. (BTW, we know what you did last summer.)
Gorge on chocolate and ice cream
If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, chocolates and ice cream are a girl’s guilty pleasures – just what you need for a pick-me-up; at least you will get the chocolates you like! Hit the supermarkets to stock up on your supply of comfort food and dig in. They make a good alternative to popcorn for your movie marathon too!
Adopt a pet
Got a pup or kitten of your own for cuddles? Lucky you. If not, time to head down to your nearest pet shop or rescue shelter and buy make a new friend. One that will love you unconditionally, always be happy to see you when you walk through the door, stay by your side and comfort you when you’re feeling down, and whose obedience can be bribed with food if necessary. Psst… you can even team up with your (new) doggie pal as a volunteer duo this Valentines!
Spend time with the fam
Ok, let’s face it – it’s your family that has your back at the end of the day. Love is family, family is love, blah blah. So, stop thinking that it’s the end of the world if you don’t have a date and spend some quality time with the people that you should hold dearest. Why not head to Gardens by the Bay for their Valentine’s Day special with Corrinne May (free admission). Relish a chill-out picnic against the gorgeous garden backdrop while soaking in soothing tunes from the acclaimed local songstress.
