A French Kiss in Singapore
Exit stage left, Serge Gainsbourg – we’ve fallen for four local music-makers who are breathing new life into captivating French melodies.
Nothing beats having smooth, French, seductive vocals whisk you away into a time of romantic merriment on a December night in Singapore.
Expect wicked harmonies and nifty choreography in Sing’theatre’s A French Kiss in Singapore – truly a treat for the eyes (and ears)! Director/choreographer George Chan, radio deejay Robin Goh and everyone’s favourite funnyman Hossan Leong will entertain you with a repertoire of familiar tunes and haunting melodies from four of France’s beloved music legends.
We particularly adore the catchy “Boomerang” by Serge Gainsbourg, who gained notoriety in the ‘60s for a rather expressive (read: erotic) duet. Don’t worry; you’ll get a taste of that song’s breathy gasps in a raunchy cabaret-style performance.
For die-hard romantics, enjoy poignant songs about love and loss by Charles Trenet and Jacques Brel. Charles Aznavour’s jingles on drinking and pretty shitty days (that’s the song title; we kid you not) will also leave you chuckling at the cast’s antics. And their version of “Ne Me Quitte Pas” (Don’t Leave Me) will tug at your heartstrings – watch to find out just whose voice takes the limelight!
A hot honey tip: don’t miss hunky Australian cast member Linden Furnell, who is the show’s John Mayer guitar virtuoso. Exhibiting a brilliant turn as a demure Japanese maiden, this 24-year-old LASALLE graduate is quite the dark horse.
At the heart of it all, A French Kiss in Singapore is a no-frills showcase of timeless French classics with a dash of local flavour. Be bowled over by the songwriters’ saucy exploits (with the likes of famed actresses Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin) and each song’s colourful backstory. Francophiles, unite!
A French Kiss in Singapore runs till Saturday, 7 December at SOTA Drama Theatre – only four days left to enjoy an explosively divine night of pleasing Parisian tunes. Ooh la la!
