Park yourself on the couch and embrace a whole new world of on-demand entertainment
TV junkies, you can now retire your VPN (Virtual Private Network) account. Netflix, the top Internet television network in the world, has finally launched in Singapore. Hurrah! Don’t know what the big deal is? Here are five things you need to know about the America’s most popular on-demand streaming service. Also, get ready for the inevitable onslaught of “Netflix & chill” jokes…
1) You can sign up for just $10.98 a month
Yes, it’s that cheap! For the cost of two meals at a coffee shop, you can enjoy the Netflix’s basic subscription package. Upgrade to the standard package ($13.98) and you’ll enjoy HD streaming and be able to watch two screens at the same time. If you plan to share your account with your family, go for the premium package ($16.98) that will let you watch four screens at a time and stream in Ultra HD.
2) You can watch it on most devices
Not all of us have the time to sink into the couch and catch up on the latest season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, so we love the fact that Netflix offers on-the-go streaming on smartphones and tablets. If you’ve got an Xbox or Playstation console, you can download the Netflix app and stream it directly from your TV to really take advantage of the Ultra HD streaming option.
3) You can share it
Depending on the package you sign up for, one Netflix account can support up to four users simultaneously. Each user gets a profile that they can use to save favourites, make to-watch lists, and get tailored suggestions for movies and TV shows. If you want to make sure your kids aren’t watching anything inappropriate, you can very easily set their account to block mature content.
4) You have hundreds of movies and TV shows to choose from
From campy classics like Batman Forever to cult films like There Will Be Blood, you’ll never be short on choices. While territorial licensing deals and Singapore’s strict censorship laws still affect the availability of shows (No Breaking Bad unfortunately), Netflix still manages to offer a broad spectrum of content including foreign films, anime and documentaries along with the hottest new movies and TV shows.
5) You are now part of a global community
Along with Singapore, Netflix made their streaming service available in 130 other countries today. You’re probably wondering why you should care right? This massive expansion means more money for them to continue producing Netflix Originals like Peaky Blinders, BoJack Horseman and the critically acclaimed Daredevil.
