Hands up and back away from that curling iron immediately! In our quest for luscious locks, we may actually be *gasp* damaging our tresses!
For many of us, our hair is quite literally the crowning glory of our daily get up. Can’t master the art of contouring? We can live with that. Shoes that don’t really go with the outfit? We guess it’s not the end of the world. But when it comes to our tresses, god forbid we have a bad hair day. Dry, brittle and untamable hair? Stop everything and get us to the nearest salon, stat! But no amount of hair treatments can give us Victoria’s Secret Angel locks if we’re committing any of these hair care no-nos. Are you guilty of these mistakes? Read on to find out.
Dye another day
DIY hair dyes are like magic: you can almost instantly transform a monotonous look to a slayin’ mane, without visiting your hair stylist. While it’s super tempting to change up our look ever so often, it’s not easy on our poor tresses. Chemicals from the hair dye may irritate your scalp and with frequent usage, you may develop an allergy to it. Hydrogen peroxide in hair dyes may also alter your hair structure, causing your hair to become dull and weak.
Solution: Limit how often you dye your hair, and opt to have it coloured by a professional when you do.
Take the heat off
Heat styling tools are our go-to whenever we wanna rock Kim Kardashian’s sleek straight hair, or Beyonce’s voluminous curls. Sure, they can glam us up for a night out, but in the long run, using these tools actually strip our hair of its natural oil and protein, causing brittle roots, weak hair or even hair loss.
Solution: It’s best to save these heat styling tools for extra special occasions, but if you do have to use them, always remember to coat your tresses with heat protectant first.
Stop teasing
When we’re having a flat hair day, it’s a no brainer to tease our hair to get that instant volume boost… right? Wrong. Backcombing or teasing is a sure recipe for disaster as it goes against the direction of cuticle cells. This excessive friction damages your hair and causes hair breakage -yikes!
Solution: Instead of turning to quick fixes such as teasing and backcombing, achieve naturally voluminous hair by avoiding damaging habits.
