Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Gemma Chan and the directors of Captain Marvel were in Singapore. And here's what went down…
Unless you’ve been living on a planet of your own, you’ve probably heard the buzz. Captain Marvel is releasing on 7 March 2019 and the cast, as well as the directors, made a special trip to Singapore on 14 February. As legit MCU fans, we were there at the press con (check out our video) and the fan event at Marina Bay Sands. And we’re spilling the juiciest deets…
#1 Brie Larson is a different person now
Our girl Brie can push a jeep uphill. She admits playing Carole Danvers has changed her, body and mind. She put in nine months of training and voluntarily did 90% of the stunts herself and can totally take you down!
#2 The sequel?
While there is no official confirmation from Disney, we’ve got a feeling we’ll be seeing a Captain Marvel sequel or dare we say, a trilogy. When asked who she’d like to team up with in the sequel, Brie said, “My dream would be that Ms Marvel gets to come into play in the sequel.” That would be Kamala Khan, a Pakistani American teenager from New Jersey and Marvel’s first Muslim character who first appeared in Captain Marvel #14 (August 2013), before spinning off into a solo series titled Ms Marvel.
#3 Samuel L. Jackson for President
Brie might be Captain Marvel but if you ask us (or anyone who attended the press con or fan event) Samuel L. Jackson was the star! We just couldn’t get enough of the king of cool.
Our favourite Samuel moment at the fan event went like this:
Bobby Tonelli: What was it about Captain Marvel’s story that made it special?
Samuel L. Jackson: Fact that it was Brie. I was having an opportunity to interact with someone that I liked
Nikki Muller: You make it sound like it’s the first time!
Samuel L. Jackson: *flashes a Cheshire smile and says nothing for a few seconds*
Us: Jajajajaja
#4 Director Anna Bode’s mic drop moment was gold
Captain Marvel is MCU’s first female-led superhero movie directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Anna is also the first female director to have worked on a Marvel movie. When asked about it, she gracefully replied, “This is a movie I really wanted to be a part of and having that experience has been really amazing… but it’s 2019 and I think that everybody here looks forward to the day it’s not newsworthy that a woman is directing this kind of a movie.”

#5 Brie loves a good fight
When Academy award-winner Brie Larson shot her first fight scene (the one with Jude Law), it lasted for 16 odd hours and she did 95% of the sequence. By the end of it, she was covered in cuts and bruises. “But I remember being in the car on the way back, I was just ecstatic!”
#6 If Samuel L. Jackson was a superhero
When asked if Samuel L. Jackson’s superhero outfit would include an eye patch, cape or those dapper Kangol hats he’s been rocking, he said, “probably wear an eye patch. “It adds a bit of mystery if you really need to wear it or not.”
#7 Brie’s day out in Singapore looked like this!
Confession: We (like most of you) totally Insta-stalked her. If you missed her Instastories, Brie had a gala time in Singapore. She started off jumping around in her room at Marina Bay Sands and lunched at Guan Hoe Soon, Singapore’s oldest Peranakan restaurant in Joo Chiat where she tried out local fare like buah keluak, assam fish, otah and even chendol. Next stop: Future World at ArtScience Museum followed by a trip to Gardens by the Bay. She ended the night with Gemma Chan at Newton Centre devouring chilli crab, satay, fried mantou and chicken wings with a massive tower of Tiger beer to wash it all down.
#8 Marvel ninjas, 1. Brie Larson, 0
Unlike Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo who are famous for spilling Marvel secrets, Brie held back. She didn’t tell us if Captain Marvel helps defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (even if we know the answer to it). But she did end up disclosing how the actors in costumes are scanned by 100s of cameras to create a 3D scan to create a hologram.
#9 That cat though…
Aww, we didn’t get a chance to ask Samuel our question – Is this the movie where Nick Fury loses an eye? But we also caught a glimpse of Captain Marvel merch and are ready to do some speculating. Look at the cat in muzzle and chains – we’re thinking this kitty is kinda violent. Go on and connect the dots.
#10 Btw have you seen the Captain Marvel official website?
Two days before the cast and directors met APAC media and fans in Asia, this incredible site was released. The Captain Marvel official website might just be the coolest thing we’ve seen online this year. Why? ‘Cos we’re 90s babies and it takes us back to a pre-Kardashian era.
