BooksActually is doing an all-nighter with a 24 Hour Bookstore event and it’s set to be a very bookish affair...
We love our independent stores in Singapore, one of them being the lovely neighbourhood book store, BooksActually. For years, this cult fave in Tiong Bahru has been in pursuit of a permanent home and has faced many challenges in the face of the retail industry in Singapore. Bringing back an annual tradition, the 24 Hour Bookstore event this year will see readings and book launches happening all night, but it will also be a fundraising drive for that forever home.
In the leadup to the event on 8 – 9 June, the store will be selling $50 miniature BooksActually bricks symbolic of their dream to house the bookstore in a permanent space – goodbye to rentals! But on to the main event: you can expect the who’s who of Singapore’s literary scene to treat us to book readings. Included in the line-up are the likes of Cyril Wong, Alfian Sa’at, Ng Yi-Sheng, Verena Tay, Crispin Rodrigues and more. Author and playwright Clara Chow will also be launching her book Modern Myths at the event while Cyril Wong will be relaunching his book, Like a Seed with its Singular Purpose.
If you’re up for a bookish slumber party and getting behind a good cause (we need our physical bookstores in Singapore!), get ready to stay up listening to several bedtime stories by some of the best literary talents in Singapore at BooksActually. Just remember to BYO pillow!
