Who is Graphic Rewilding & what is Bloomyard?
Acclaimed UK-based art duo Catherine Borowski and Lee Baker are the minds behind Graphic Rewilding, a public-art practice. Combine Borowski’s background in large-scale curation, sculpture, and placemaking, and Baker’s nature-based studio practice, and you get larger-than-life art showcases. Graphic Rewilding is best known for transforming architectural and urban settings with bold botanical imagery, colour, and scale.
Bloomyard is the duo’s latest project! The new immersive play experience is not just something to look at – it’s a space you can explore and play in too. Inspired by Graphic Rewilding’s floral imagery, oversized flowers will take over the gallery, turning it into a technicoloured garden. Enter a floral arch and meet playful pop-ups throughout the space.
Activities full of flower power
There are several playground elements scattered throughout the expansive IMBA Theatre, perfectly themed to Graphic Rewilding’s floral style. I’m certain the kids will make a beeline for the flower swings and the trampolines!
Coming in a group? Then you can team up and take on the flower-shaped table tennis tables. Test your hand-eye coordination and see who can get the top scores. And if you’re coming solo, fret not. You can pick up a club and hit up the garden mini-golf course with plenty of slopes, twists, and curves to challenge you.
Before you go, remember to take a gander through Stacked Store at the end. Exclusive merchandise featuring Graphic Rewilding’s botanical prints will be on display, so you can get something to commemorate your visit. Options include stickers, prints, and shirts. All tuckered out from the fun you’ve had at each game station? Refuel at Bloomery Cafe with a drink to quench your thirst. There’s a decent selection, ranging from coffee to tea, hot chocolate, and matcha. There’s no food available, so we recommend grabbing a bite to eat before entering the exhibition space.
Is Bloomyard worth a visit?
For fans of Graphic Rewilding and lovers of floral art displays, you’re in for a treat. We can see kids going wild with all the activities available, especially the swings and table tennis tables.
However, a word of caution before you book your tickets to Bloomyard: be prepared to wait.
While there’s a decent number of activities, spaces at each station are limited. With six golf clubs, six swings, five table tennis tables, and a handful of trampolines, you’ll be taking turns sharing equipment with other visitors. We anticipate long waits in between each station, which could dampen the overall experience.
If you do plan on visiting Bloomyard, we recommend choosing weekday and off-peak hour slots to avoid the crowds. And if it’s already crowded when you’re there? Stay a little longer and make the most of it, we say!
