This dance music event along Orchard Road looks to be a rave for the hipsters, with a throwback theme that’s “too school for cool”
Whether you were into the grungy spunk of Nirvana or the Brit-pop zeitgeist ruled by Blur and Oasis, or rocking out in your bedroom to Joy Division and The Smiths, your musical tastes have probably gone against the grain at some point in your life. Today, you’ll still find that spirit of left-field rebellion alive in the music scene amongst the impressionable young folks (or older hipsters), and in Singapore, there’s always been one authority that leads the charge.
Currently led by DJs weelikeme and KiDG, Poptart is a raucous, alternative party series that – for the past 11 years – has catered to partygoers who dig their indie-rock, synth-pop, post-punk and alt-rock on the dancefloor. An average, not-so-average shindig at Poptart can throw you off-guard with ’80s anthems by The Cure and The Clash, followed by noughties hits from Bloc Party and The Killers, and topped off with a massive, hugs-all-around sing-a-long to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Think of it as a communal karaoke session, laced with lots of dancing and twirling, new friends and old, and the occasional oddball shenanigans that Poptart punters always remember for years to come.

And on 24 September, the Poptart peeps are bashing out one more milestone for the record books. Taking over OverEasy Orchard for their 11th anniversary, these scene stalwarts are opening the gates to the Rock ‘N’ Roll High School; a themed throwback soiree that will bring you back to your adolescent days of anarchy. “Too School For Cool” is the dress code, so come through with threads and accessories that your teachers would’ve scoffed at; there’s no one judging, and that’s the tireless, timeless beauty of Poptart. Doesn’t matter if you’re 25 or 45; if you’ve got young blood in your veins, this b-day bash will make sure you never lose that feeling.
