We chat with Amrita Dhillon about her passion for creating beautiful bakes and running her business.
We love entrepreneurs and small business owners at Honeycombers, which is why we’ve created Launchpad, a digital networking platform (with IRL benefits) that encourages connection, business support and community. It’s a privilege and pleasure to learn from so many talented folks! Looking for inspiration? Check out how Amrita Dhillon, the founder of Amrita’s Artisan Bakeology, gets it done like a boss.
Tell us the story behind your business.
Our journey began with a simple belief – that every occasion, big or small, deserves to be celebrated with the finest handcrafted cakes. At Amrita’s, we transform everyday moments into unforgettable memories with our artisanal creations. What started as a personal hobby has blossomed into a business dedicated to spreading joy through delectable creations.
What are some milestones or achievements you’re most proud of?
In the journey of Amrita’s Artisan Bakeology, I cherish several meaningful milestones. These include being interviewed on Channel NewsAsia during our inaugural year, which highlighted our resilience amid the pandemic. We were also featured on Radio 91.3 FM, amplifying our passion for artisanal baking.
Being recognised as one of the Top 50 Sikhs in Singapore and winning the prestigious Honeycombers Best Cake Shop Award in 2023 filled us with profound joy. Additionally, serving as a panellist for graduating Sikhs, appearing on Vasantham, and being featured in esteemed publications like SethLui and Her World for our delectable cheesecakes have been moments of immense gratitude. Each milestone represents a shared journey of connection and appreciation, shaping our narrative with love and dedication.
Share with us a setback that taught you a valuable lesson about running a business.
One setback profoundly impacted me, emphasising the unpredictability of business operations. Despite meticulous planning, delivery partner issues led to delayed orders. A particularly challenging incident involved a driver delivering a cake three hours late, remaining uncontactable. To salvage the situation, I promptly baked and delivered a new cake, alongside a full refund. This experience highlighted the critical importance of effective service recovery.
While unforeseen challenges may arise, our response determines customer satisfaction. Acknowledging faults and taking proactive steps, even beyond apologies, is vital in maintaining trust and loyalty. This setback reinforced the value of resilience and adaptability in navigating unexpected hurdles, ensuring continued excellence in customer service.
Describe a typical day in your life and what you love most about it.
A typical day in my life is a vibrant blend of creativity, activity, and connection. Mornings are dedicated to baking, decorating delightful cakes, and preparing them for deliveries. I find rejuvenation mid-day with a gym session at F45, invigorating both body and mind. Throughout the day, I cherish moments over coffee or dinner with friends, nurturing relationships that enrich my personal and professional life.
Networking events offer valuable opportunities for growth and collaboration, expanding my horizons within the community. Between these interactions, I manage orders for the next day, ensuring seamless operations and timely deliveries. What I love most about my day is its inherent flexibility; each day brings new challenges, opportunities, and moments of fulfilment in pursuing my passion.
What’s your favourite book, movie, or TV show that has influenced your entrepreneurial mindset?
My favourite book that has deeply influenced my entrepreneurial mindset is “10x is Easier Than 2x” by Dan Sullivan. This transformative read by the world-renowned coach for highly successful entrepreneurs unveils the counterintuitive process of achieving exponential growth.
Rather than striving for incremental gains, Sullivan advocates for a shift in perspective towards 10X expansion across four crucial freedoms: time, money, relationships, and purpose. By focusing on quality over quantity and nurturing these freedoms, I’ve learned to unlock boundless potential and drive profound impact in my life and business endeavours.
Any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
My top tip is to embrace the power of outsourcing. While it may seem daunting or costly initially, delegating tasks that aren’t your forte can save you significant stress and time in the long run. By entrusting these responsibilities to experts who excel in those areas, you free up valuable mental bandwidth to focus on what you do best.
Remember, investing in outsourcing isn’t just about lightening your workload; it’s about maximising efficiency and enabling sustainable growth for your business.
Top tip for maintaining a good work-life balance?
Remember to work hard and play harder. Finding this balance ensures you recharge effectively, leading to greater productivity and fulfilment in both aspects of life.
Favourite thing to do on weekends?
Hustle and spend quality time with my family and friends.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself that not many people know.
I’m left-handed – apparently, some say left-handed people are creative!
