From being mindful of consumption to slowing the F down, here’s what you can do to show love to the environment.
Just ‘cos we’re in a pandemic doesn’t mean we have to throw sustainable practices out the window. We’ve seen lotsa support for local businesses, excellent community initiatives that give us the warm fuzzies and inspiring stories for a ray of hope. Now, go the extra mile by creating a sustainable environment at home, with these ridiculously easy steps.
Say no to plastic
We can’t really control the use of plastic containers and bags for deliveries. Kudos to local businesses that use reusable packaging, though! You can always request for no plastic cutlery, bring along your own reusable bags for takeout or grocery shopping, or offer vendors your BYO containers for takeaway.
Declutter the right way
Decluttering’s a great way to kill time, create peace at home and allow that positive energy to flow right in – even better when it’s done sustainably. Instead of throwing out stuff, donate your preloved items to charities (after you’ve sanitised them, of course) or learn to recycle at home. Psst… check out this cool app that puts the fun in recycling.
Opt for reusable masks
FYI, it’s now mandatory to wear a mask in public. The government has already issued reusable masks for everyone. If you need more, don’t resort to precious (and single-use) surgical masks that should be reserved for frontline staff. We’ve culled a list of reusable masks that come in different sizes and have pockets to slot in filter inserts. Alternatively, you can even create your own face mask.
Be mindful of consumption
We understand that increased levels of anxiety can cause panic buying but let’s remember to purchase or consume only what’s essential. In case you did buy too much, this storage bag keeps produce fresh for longer than usual. While you’re at it, try composting too. The Green Collective has a variety of composter kits to get you started.
Don’t just stop there. Now that we’re spending the bulk of our time at home, we should also be mindful of our water (say no to long showers) and electricity consumption (turn off the A/C and switch to the fan).
Slow the F down
Self-care is so crucial during these troubled times. Though we’re all probably rocking our WFH offices, it’s important to clock off work at the right time too. Turn off your screens for a hot minute and do some journaling or reading (we’ve got a list of great reads), grow your green thumb, pick up a hobby or calm your mind with meditation. Get the hang of it with our self-care tips.
Educate yourself
Delve into the subject by taking up a course on broader issues such as the energy system and its environmental impacts or take part in virtual events such as the Earth Day Digital Conscious Pop-Up and Fashion Revolution Day 2020, where you can fuel your mind with engaging panel discussions and workshops.
