Laura Egloff has branched out from her childrenswear label Velveteen and created a line for women, so we wanted to find out more
Even though Korean fashion is trending hard, there are still many Hong Kong fashion brands and shoe designers that we love and support. Hong Kong-based American designer Laura Egloff has seen her pieces worn by the children of celebrities such as Jessica Alba and fashion bloggers like Chriselle Lim. In an industry known for its big egos, she is somewhat of an anomaly, and we caught up with her to dig deeper into what makes her journey so unique.
An interview with Laura Egloff
Hey, Laura! What’s the challenge in designing womenswear as opposed to kidswear?
The womenswear collection is a natural extension of the work we’re doing on Velveteen and was launched in response to requests from the stylish parents of our existing customers. That said, Laura Egloff by Velveteen is a brand with a very strong perspective and is not simply a “mini-me” collection.
I design for women with confidence and a strong personal style who know who they are and love fashion but would never allow themselves to become a “fashion victim.” They purchase quality pieces that have a strong personality and work these into their existing wardrobes to create a look all their own.
What inspires you and your collections?
Velveteen is strongly influenced by my own sense of style and the collective experiences I’ve had growing up in California and living in New York, London and now Hong Kong. Our brand DNA is very rooted in my memory of 1970s bohemian California beach lifestyle with a dash of rock ‘n roll inspiration and a sophisticated twist.
Some of your favourites from your latest collection?
The Agnes Playsuit has become my favourite item of the season – I can wear it to the beach with a pair of easy sandals or out to dinner with friends in strappy heels. It’s really flattering and comfortable. I’m also loving the Emanuelle Dress in khaki satin for an easy look for office or school events.
You’ve dressed many stars. Whose interpretation of your brand did you really enjoy?
I absolutely love the blog post Cara G McIlroy recently did where she and her two beautiful daughters were all wearing pieces from both brands. I also love how Jessica Alba’s daughters style up our pieces to show their own unique personalities.
If you could wear only one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A pair of Current Elliot skinny jeans and a heavily detailed/embroidered blouse. If we’re talking eternity – I want comfort and style that can be dressed up or down with a quick change of shoes and jewellery.
What’s one thing you want people to know about you?
I’ve been working to be a fashion designer since I was 13. I used to sit at the edge of my mum’s bed and tell her about the importance of good joinery as I sketched. She never dissuaded me but made sure I also finished a business degree so I’d have the business knowledge to back up my passion.
