Handcrafted Pasta at La Volta: A Taste of Italy in Hong Kong
Between exploring trendy bars and indulging in new menus for my honey bites content, pasta is the comfort food I always run back to. There’s something soothing about twirling al dente spaghetti around the fork and savouring the aromatic richness of a homemade sauce. Each dish tells a story, inviting me to celebrate the artistry behind it, making every bite a delicious discovery worth sharing.
My recent visit to La Volta left quite an impression with its pasta plates, all meticulously crafted by the incredibly lovable Austrian chef Roland Schuller.
The restaurant

Located in the bustling streets of Causeway Bay, La Volta is a cosy eatery that allows you to escape from the city with a comforting, homey meal. As soon as you step inside, expect to be enveloped by a warm ambiance that beautifully blends industrial chic with rustic charm.

Exposed brick walls and warm wooden accents create an intimate setting perfect for small group dinners and date nights up.
The concept

La Volta is the brainchild of restaurateur Jeffrey Mui and renowned two-Michelin-starred chef Roland Schuller. Together, they champion the essence of Italian dining through a curated menu of handcrafted pastas. Each dish invites you to linger and relish the rich tapestry of flavours that unfold with every bite.
Lunch service

La Volta’s menu is a pasta lover’s dream, rotating every two weeks to showcase seasonal ingredients. At lunch, you’re treated to a selection of four starters, six handmade pastas, and three desserts. Kicking things off is chef Schuller’s Spaghetti alla Carbonara, a refined take on the Roman classic. The silky sauce clings to every strand of pasta, offering a lighter yet indulgent experience that warms the heart.

Another highlight is the Mafaldine. With ruffled edges, the noodles are generously coated in a fresh broccolini pesto, bringing a burst of fresh spring flavours with every bite. The Rigatoni, with equally fun ridged edges, is also a crowd pleaser with a rich ragù sauce.
Dinner indulgence

What truly sets La Volta apart is its commitment to quality. Most pastas are handmade daily, each meticulously shaped to pair with its corresponding sauce. They also feature premium dried pastas from Monograno Felicetti and Gentile, showcasing how both fresh and dried varieties can shine in various dishes.
As evening falls, the menu evolves, inviting you to dive deeper into bold flavours. The signature Burrata & Truffle Honey Bruschetta—a creamy indulgence that pairs beautifully with the sweet earthiness of truffle honey, kicks things off on a luscious tone.

To follow, every bite of the Oxtail Croquettes feels like a warm hug, with a crispy exterior that gives way to a tender, braised filling.

Then, the pastas take centre stage. The Linguine alla Vongole is a must-try, where each strand clings to the fragrant, briny sauce that brims with oceanic notes. The showstopping Egg Raviolo has already seen social media virality thanks to the river of golden yolk that oozes into the silky sauce when gently poked with a fork or knife.

For vegetarians, the Spaghetti alla Nerano features a refreshing zucchini sauce that is light in taste but rich in texture. For those craving for a more indulgent dish, go for the Crispy Gnocchi alla Iberico with golden exteriors and pillowy interiors, paired with a slow-braised pork ragù that adds depth and richness.
Drinks and desserts

Beyond pasta, La Volta offers a curated beverage programme featuring exceptional Italian wines at reasonable prices, alongside four signature cocktails. The La Volta Pomodoro Fizz packs a punch with rich tomato flavour in a crisp, sparkling serve—clean, refreshing, and utterly unique.

No meal is complete without a sweet finale, and La Volta delivers. The Signature Pear Tart features flaky puff pastry filled with caramelised Williams pear, accompanied by homemade vanilla gelato. If pear isn’t your thing, go for the classic La Volta Tiramisu that satisfies with aromatic espresso-soaked ladyfingers layered with velvety mascarpone cream.
La Volta is a new gem on our city’s evergrowing food scene, beautifully capturing the essence of Italian dining through thoughtfully crafted pasta dishes and inviting atmosphere. Whether you’re seeking a comforting lunch or an indulgent dinner, each visit promises a delightful experience filled with rich flavours and heartfelt hospitality. Chef Roland Schuller’s dedication to quality shines through every plate, making La Volta a must-visit destination for pasta lovers and food enthusiasts alike. So, gather your friends or that special someone, and immerse yourself in the warmth and artistry this cozy eatery has to offer.
