After a series of renovations, Il Bel Paese Discovery Bay is back and better than ever (in our opinion)
You know that we only eat the best cuisine in town. From cheap eats in Sheung Wan to vegan restaurants and epic fine dining spots, we believe food to be medicine for the body and soul, something not to be taken lightly. Luckily for us, Italians have long held similar views. Enter Il Bel Paese Discovery Bay, an outpost of the restaurant group that melds dine-in and dine-out with wonderful fresh produce from the Motherland land. See why we’re in love with this green beauty below.
Oh, IBP (yeah, you know me)
It’s kind of hard to miss this behemoth of a store located in Discovery Bay Plaza. It’s the one that makes you feel like you’ve just stepped into a piazza right here in HK. Split into three areas: restaurant, grocer, and Gelataria, this is one of our fave places to eat and shop in DB. The fact that the staff are wonderful (and good looking!) is a bonus.
Eat it, just eat it
Whatever you have here will be delicious. I’m a big fan of their Margherita pizza, made on that perfect Italian-style base with tasty tomato, mozzarella cheese, and fresh basil. It sounds like an easy thing to craft, but in reality, simplicity is often the hardest to perfect. Throw some Tabasco on top for a little extra fire and you’ll be good to go.
Another highlight from me is the Tiramisu, something I don’t just eat for dinner (I may or may not be finishing off a tub as I sit here writing this.) A blend of lady fingers, cream, and chocolate, this is one of the best desserts in my opinion. Ideally I’d up the booze and coffee levels here, but I’m a bit weird like that.
While I don’t eat meat, trusted companions have vouched for the Vitello Tonnato, the Prosciutto e Melone, and the Spring Chicken.
Ding Dong, baby
As an added extra, the outlet has its own grocery that is stocked with fresh products direct from Italy. Tomatoes, Mozzarella, melons, and water in many varieties make shopping here a breeze. Plus, I really appreciate that they use paper bags for produce and don’t put everything into plastic; it’s so much better for the environment.
Finally, if you’re after something a little indulgent, be sure to stop by their Gelateria and try some of their traditional Italian flavours, including: Stracciatella, Tiramisu, and Pistachio. Just a taste will put you in a better mood.
