Having spent many hot seasonsin the 852, I’ve tasted my way across parlours around town before giving you my best picks. Whatever the season, here’s where you should go for sweet sorbets and creamy gelatos, handpicked by yours truly based on value-for-money, deliciousness, and Insta-worthiness.

1. Messina: Heavenly gelato

No list of Hong Kong’s best ice creams would be complete without Messina. This Australian gelato brand has been stealing the hearts of local dessert lovers since its opening. The menu brims with a smorgasbord of flavours, from signatures like Hokey Pokey and Super Dulce De Leche to Hong Kong-exclusive creations. While we love the evergreen options, we always return to catch their seasonal specials, too.

Tucked away on Gough Street is The Ice Cream and Cookie Co. – a cosy hole in the wall serving up quality scoops in cups, cones, or between two indulgent housemade cookies. When I first saw its picture-perfect ice cream sandwiches on the ‘gram, I knew I had to pay the Co. a visit, and I was not disappointed! I love that this parlour serves a diverse line up of traditional and South-east Asian flavours, and the sweetness is well-balanced in its frosty sandwiches.

Dood Bottega Gelateria will forever be my “hear me out” ice cream shop in Hong Kong, and here’s why. Founded by a local gelato wizard, this shop always ensures the use of top quality fruits, nuts, chocolates, and other fresh ingredients in-house. No artificial colouring or flavouring, just good, honest food in every scoop… That’s why Dood Bottega sits at a higher price point than other ice cream shops on this list. While you might be hesitant about its three-figure price tag, trust me when I say the gelato here is worth every penny.

Silky smooth gelato is slow-churned and made with premium ingredients almost entirely from scratch. Beyond gelato, Snack Baby also whips up comforting cocktails, indulgent milkshakes, and more.

With over 90 recipes up its sleeve, Venchi is one of my go-to spots for gelato in Hong Kong. Using premium local dairy, the parlour celebrates traditional Italian flavours alongside contemporary creations and Hong Kong-inspired flavours. In addition to its creamy gelato, Venchi also caters to vegans and those that are lactose intolerant with its line of sorbet, which has no added sugar or artificial ingredients.
