Add some sass and pizzazz to your feed! Celebrate LGBTQ+ pride and the art form of drag with these badass Hong Kong drag queens.
13 November marks Hong Kong’s Pride Parade where people march from Victoria Park to Tamar Park in support of LGBTQ+ rights. This year’s event, due to social distancing restrictions, is a Rainbow Market at The Wave in Kwun Tong, with 30 different booths run by LGBTQ+ supportive businesses. While support for the LGBTQ+ community in Hong Kong has grown—for example, a LGBTQ+ friendly sexual health clinic and a mental health clinic—there’s still away to go towards the legal protection of same-sex relationships. But there are many ways we can help raise awareness. Looking for inspiration and to get fired up? Start by supporting these badass Hong Kong drag queens, whom you can cheer on at buzzing gay bars!
Hong Kong drag queens you need to know
1. XXXotica
Turn the heat up! XXXotica is one of the most confident and baddest queens. She was featured in Marie Claire magazine and she’s always striving to raise awareness of HIV testing and education. You can also tune in to her IGTVs where she reveals the magic of transforming into a drag queen.
2. Madame Mincemeat
You’re very likely to bump into Madame Mincemeat if you see XXXotica – the two often host shows together and they make the sassiest pair! Madame Mincemeat made her debut at Clockenflap in 2015 and has let loose and not cared about what others think since. We also love her glitzy style and fashion sense!
3. Coco Pop
A jack of many trades, Coco Pop is the vocalist of her band, Coco and the Beasts, a radio host at We Are Family, a costume designer, and a drag superstar. She was a speaker at this year’s Women’s Festival where she shared two stories about getting through life without one’s loved ones, which she wittily described as “What to Do When I’m Gone and Dancing at the Pity Party”.
4. Justin Chu
Justin is a Community Sex Educator and an MPhil Candidate at the University of Hong Kong. He has given lectures at local universities about gender equality and about performing gender and sexuality through arts. Justin’s classes aren’t your average sex education classes; Justin comes in drag attire, with full-face make-up and stilettoes. Given his great outreach and passion in helping others, he aims to become a sex therapist one day.
5. Mocha Diva
The Events and Entertainment Manager at Hong Kong’s famed drag bar, Petticoat Lane, Mocha Diva is a proud Pinay drag queen. She participated in season two of Thailand’s spin-off of RuPual’s Drag Race: Drag Race Thailand. Mocha has performed in drag since 2006 and considers herself to be a muscle queen.
