Tips for a stress-free NYE in Bali

Stay close to your NYE party spot
This is the big one. The roads in South Bali are gridlocked from early evening until after midnight, so book accommodation as close as possible to your event.

Pre-arrange your transport
If you do need to travel, pre-book a driver. Grab and Gojek are in high-demand over NYE, and drivers often cancel if traffic is bad. You can pre-book BlueBird taxis in the app, or hire a driver for the evening.

Book early to avoid surge pricing
Hotels, events, and even restaurants raise prices over NYE, but if you book early, you can sometimes nab cheaper Early Bird tickets.

Expect fireworks everywhere
Beaches and villages will be filled with fireworks – it’s loud, chaotic, and fun. For free shows, just look up!

Leave home early
Bali’s traffic on New Year’s Eve is notoriously bad, so if you do need to travel, leave in the afternoon, not evening. The later you leave, the worse it gets.

Withdraw cash in advance
ATMs in busy areas often run out of money over NYE. Withdraw what you need a few days in advance.

Keep valuables close
Bali is very safe, but crowded places are prime spots for petty theft. Leave your passport in the hotel, keep your phone zipped away, and always be mindful of your surroundings.

Have a rain plan
It’s wet season, so if your party is outdoors, check whether there’s cover, and pack a light rain jacket.

Look out for the Bali dogs
Every year, fireworks scare local dogs, and many get lost or injured during NYE. If you’re in a villa with a resident dog, keep it inside. And share the “Lost Dog” posters on January 1 to help the search.

On New Year’s Eve, the best hotel is the one that’s closest to the place you’re celebrating. Pick your NYE party, then pick a hotel that’s close by – or better yet, a hotel that’s hosting its own parties! Canggu

Best for big parties, beach clubs and great dining
Nightlife in Canggu is world-famous – it’s full of bars, beach clubs and nightclubs partying well past midnight. And on New Year’s Eve? It’s even wilder. If you want to be close to the action but away from the noise, Pererenan sits just west of Canggu and is a little calmer.

• Where to stay: Noema Resort Pererenan is a modern hotel with a rooftop bar and stylish suites, walking distance to the beach. It’s best for anyone who wants to be in Canggu for NYE, but away from the chaos.

Seminyak

Best for big parties
Seminyak has Bali’s biggest concentration of beach clubs and bars, and its beach is one of the busiest spots for fireworks on NYE. The roads are gridlocked by early evening, so stay central and walk if you can.

• Where to stay: Desa Potato Head is an eco-friendly ‘village’ with zero-waste dining and some of the biggest NYE parties in Bali. It’s best for eco-conscious travellers who also want to be in the heart of the action.

Uluwatu

Best for clifftop views
New Year’s Eve on the Bukit peninsula means clifftop beach clubs and fireworks over the Indian Ocean. The views are spectacular, but the roads are narrow and slow, so pick a resort with its own celebrations, or stay close to where you’re planning to party.

Nusa Dua

Best for families

Where to watch fireworks for free in Bali

Don’t want to pay for a ticketed party? You don’t have to. Bali’s beaches put on a spectacular (and completely free) fireworks show every New Year’s Eve, with resorts, beach clubs and locals all launching their own displays right along the coast.

• Seminyak Beach is one of the best spots for this — plenty of beachfront hotels and beach clubs set off their own fireworks around midnight, so even without a ticket, you’ll get a front-row view from the sand.
• Canggu Beach offers a similar scene to Seminyak, with beach clubs lining the sand and masses of expats, locals and tourists congregating on the beach at midnight.
• Sanur Beach is the quieter option — better suited if you want to watch the show with family or without fighting through nightclub-level crowds.
• Nusa Dua Beach is another good bet, thanks to its concentration of five-star resorts — many put on their own fireworks for guests, which often spill into public view from the beach itself.
• Jimbaran Beach combines the show with a relaxed, low-key setting. Grab a beachfront seafood dinner earlier in the evening, or head back to the sand for the midnight display.
